Idris Oscar ?

Biopics are always the best oscar baits... maybe he can get a nomination.

He would have to beat Morgan Freeman's performance in Invictus, and that seems like a huge task especially as Freeman had the advantage of looking very much like Mandela. Even so I think Idris is definetly capable of an oscar in the future and this could possibly be a contender. A Bafta nomination seems much more likely.

Elba and Harris could certainly enjoy some buzz for their performances in this film...I wonder whether Harris will be campaigned as Leading Actress or as Supporting

He does deserve one.

Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, Colin Firth as King George VI, Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote, Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles, Adrien Brody as Wladyslaw Szpilman... so that's 7 out of the last 11 Best Actor winners that have played real people. Which is understandable, because if you can make an audience believe that you are that person then you have done your job very well. I think that Idris will at least be nominated, although this year's winner may be one of Tom Hanks' roles - one as Walt Disney and the other as Captain Richard Phillips. I believe that he is capable of equalling Day-Lewis' record of 3 Best Actor wins. Michael B. Jordan looks a certainty to receive a nomination for Fruitvale Station... Leonardo DiCaprio has a chance with The Great Wolf of Wall Street... I would be surprised if Robert Redford wasn't nominated for All Is Lost since he is the only one in the film (James Franco in 127 Hours and Tom Hanks in Castaway were both in isolation for huge parts of their respective films and both deservedly received nominations). It's silly for me to say who will win or even get nominated at this stage, since none of the films I've mentioned have been released where I live, and the only Oscar-worthy films I've seen in 2013 are Before Midnight and Mud (neither of which are 'Oscar fodder' despite being masterpieces), but these seem to be the roles that critics keep mentioning. Ethan Hawke was excellent in Before Midnight but won't get an acting nomination, although I'm sure he will for the screenplay. Also, apparently Christian Bale is a favourite for a nomination for American Hustle... and then there's Steve Carell for Foxcatcher, although Hollywood may do as they have done to Jim Carrey and not see past his comedic reputation to understand that he is a very talented and versatile actor. Matthew McConaughey was wonderful in Mud and is apparently excellent in Dallas Buyers Club, so he may be in with a shout. But hey, I've just mentioned about 10 actors and there will only be 5 nominees. Early predictions? Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, Matthew McConaughey, Michael B. Jordan. Hanks to win, purely because he has two massive roles this year. I'd say I'll be right with at least three of these, but who knows?

reply

I like your predictions.

Mine would be Elba for this film, Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, Hanks for Saving Mr. Banks and Leonardo Di Caprio for The Wolf of Wall Street.

I would say Steve Carell but quite a few people have said that his role might fall into the supporting category.

Based on what I saw in the trailer (and if that is his voice) I say ..... YES

I will be attending that premiere screening.

I also believe that Idris will far outshine Morgan Freeman. The later portrayed him in his later life as the Redeemer of his nation. Elba has a much more challenging task as he chronicles what brought him to that stage. And Elba has that supreme alpha male persona necessary to portray The Great Redeemer.

Here's more proof.
