Would you say basically Sherlock killed this show?

Now I love Sherlock, it is amazing, but I feel like it may have helped to push Dirk Gently off the air. I know it was cancelled mostly because of budget cuts but I've read a lot of reviews and recaps comparing this to Sherlock and while a lot of them skewed favorably toward Dirk Gently on the writing side, they often said Sherlock easily outshone DG with its large budget. It's just a shame there wasn't enough room for both. I also sort of feel that Sherlock won't last much longer because of the growing careers of its stars whereas Dirk Gently, had it not been cancelled, would have potentially lasted through several series.

It was nothing to do with Sherlock. BBC4 had huge budget cuts and this drama fell by the wayside, as it was not that good.

Its that man again!!

No. The two shows are distinctly different. Sherlock is a straight up whodunit while Dirk Gently is more of a comedy with a sci-fi edge.

I think it tried to throw too much stuff from the book in, which would have worked better if it was an adaptation of the book. The biggest example from the pilot was making time travel the solution out of nowhere when in the book, even if you come into the story without knowing a single thing about Douglas Adam's career, you could guess at.
