Question

Did the series cover the whole first book or did it get cancelled part of the way through? The four episodes are available on iTunes and if it's not complete I won't bother buying it.

reply

The series, which consist of only four episodes, don't really cover the book at all. It has familiar elements, names, and occasional quotes but it really has nothing to do with the books. For instance Richard MacDuff is now Dirk's assistant/partner and not a software engineer. Gordon Way is Susan's ex-boyfriend and not her brother. Professor Chronotis is replaced by Professor Jericho who is not a time traveler.

Some of the elements that made it into the series are Richard and Dirk meeting when Richard breaks into Susan's flat to steal her laptop before she can read an email that he regrets sending, in fact the whole telephone conversation is included. (Rule one of housebreaking is never answer the phone. Etc...)

Dirk buys a new fridge because he can no longer gain access to his old one, though this is because his cleaning woman has padlocked it shut.

In the pilot Dirk is painting over a patch of wall that he has been writing on that has words like "electronic monk", "salt cellar, Greek pot", and "Kubla Khan".

Overall the series is worth watching, but don't go into it thinking it's going to be just like the books. Just enjoy (or don't) them for what they are.
