Come on Australia, Really?

Australian filmmakers are out of ideas. Some bikie gangs make it to the news headlines, and BAM there is a TV series made about it. And this is perfectly fine if they make an average quality TV series (I have low expectations) but they mess it up.

Yes, this is a thread just to complain about Australian TV series, in particular this one.

The standard of Australian television is abysmally low.

Our movies are even worse. I've been saying it for years. The only projects that get funded are the projects that they hope to be able to sell overseas.

For example the movies "Red Dog" (Financing provided by National Bank of California - Americans love that "stupid outback bloke" act, hence Steve Irwin's popularity), "Australia", etc...

i guess it has come to a point that "doers" don't do the right thing, and those who know the right thing are not "doers".

Someone's got to step up and show them how it's done ;)

A shame really as the lead up to Milperra and its aftermath was a story worth telling.

Just turning Campbell's book "Enforcer" into a movie was all they needed to do.

It looks like "Stone" will remain as the benchmark biker movie.

our movies are excellent, you just have to be able to recognise *beep* The Proposition, animal kingdom, the square, last train to freo are all great films.

"In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary...come again".

Rubbish, "The Sullivans" was brilliant.

Some bikie gangs make it to the news? You do know how long ago this happened, right?

At least it's Aussie and not some leb gang infestation, that will happen soon enough with the next installment of underbelly..

god, stick to master chef and dancing with the stars if this is so terrible. At least this is something interesting, based on historical fact, and not some garbage trotted out for the ipad kiddies to tweet about...

Oh how cute. A trendy who doesn't know it yet.

We make some of the crappest television shows on the planet and yet we produce some outstanding actors. Guy Pearce, Heath Ledger, Joel Edgerton, Cate Blanchett, the list goes on and on. I can only assume that they get plenty of practise in what not to do before the bugger off for pastures new overseas.

If you called a Centaur a horses arse, would he be offended?

This very fact perplexed me. I just finished a ton of research for a manuscript about Australia and in terms of television/movies, I'd have to agree. How does Australia churn out phenomenal acting talent (I'll add Hugh Jackman, Toni Collette, Naomi Watts, Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush...), but not so great movies and television shows?

I suppose I shouldn't be questioning this. If it were different, we in the States wouldn't benefit from these fab actors coming over.

It's all about the money. Well, mostly about the money. The USA has plenty of investment in film that allows them to try new things, and plenty of "sure things" like superhero movies that they can fall back on for guaranteed cash.

In Australia we have plenty of animal movies (horses, dogs, whatever you want, just don't clutter it up with humans), and movies that are basically tourism ADs full of outdated outback bogan stereotypes wrapped up with a flimsy story and a lot of shots of the landscape.

My Mrs is a chef and so Masterchef is always on TV at home. I recently saw some Masterchef Australia and was actually impressed - At least they get book deals, a boat load of cash and job offers... the UK Masterchefs only get a poxy little trophy!!

Personally, I thought Bikie Wars was alright. Very dated, but intentionally so and at least based on something that actually happened.
I do think Aus is perhaps riding on the success of Sons Of Anarchy a bit, but even that is OK when you consider that, like the UK, half the Bikie Clubs you guys have are actually chapters of American MCs.

Interesting to note that Matt Nable (Jock Ross) is already moving into US productions, namely playing Johns in the recent Riddick film.
