What the heck is going on here? Why is this board not hopping?
I was lucky enough to see this at Tribeca in April and it blew me away. This is simply the best documentary of a singer I've seen.
It's shot in such a beautifully backstage but full access way, that this could be any singer and you'd still enjoy it. Though music and studio work is the important part of the movie, it's the mind of Tony that's the star here. The "over the top of the movie yet understated" narraration keeps it from getting too music-centric. You end up just getting lost in Tony's life and thoughts to the point where the music is just a beautiful backdrop.
Michael Buble comes out looking semi-normal here, and the Amy Whinehouse part.....I'll just say that could have been a movie onto itself. Her "last session" is worth the price of admission, alone. I wouldn't be surprised if some writer makes an award winning script from that scene. (hint hint, I want royalties. Or at least a thank you in the credits.)
This is a must see for any one who even likes Tony, but you don't have to, to enjoy this documentary. The problem is that you may end up loving him after you watch it.
Tony's son should win some kind of award for managing. We should be so lucky as to have someone like that in our lives.
What I can't understand, for such an extra-ordinary film about a most beloved man, why is there such little buzz about this movie? I know the crowd at this screening was "a little older", but I thought at least one filmy would have posted something by now.
The movie is finally being released in a couple of weeks, I think.
