Don't Push Appetizers at Me!

Willie wants the servers to try to get the diners to order appetizers to run up the checks. That would really bother me because I go to restaurants with specific ideas of (a) how much I want to spend and (b) how much I want to eat. I'll often not have dessert because I'm too full, and I sometimes take part of my meal home. The last thing I want is someone trying to get me to order an appetizer as well.

He also said to ask diners if they want a cocktail rather than a drink; he says it "sounds better." Well, my drink of choice is iced tea or, if I'm having a burger or pizza or something similar, diet soda. Drink is definitely the operative word that should be used.

I'm a pleasant, polite diner, and I tip well, but I don't spend an arm and a leg on a meal either!

LMFAO!!!!!!

A waiter/waitress is just doing their job. Upselling may be the difference in them paying their rent AND utilities or just their rent. As a customer, the OP has the right to say "no thank you" but many of us do not go out to eat knowing exactly what we will order and spend. Some of us want to hear the specials, or try a new entree etc.

Yes I so agree that the wait staff are just doing their job in
trying to upsell appetizers. I'm one who usually does not order
these items unless of course I am really hungry or if I go to
a restaurant where I have enjoyed the food and atmosphere then
perhaps I may partake in an appetizer. If I am alone then I
usually do not order any though may do so if I am with someone
or a group of diners.

It's a business, and it's how it works. Of course they are going to try to sell as much as they can, it's how they make money. You don't want an appetizer, you can say no. You don't want a cocktail, you say no. Not everybody who walks in knows exactly what they want already. They also appreciate knowing what their options are. Just because you dine out a certain way, does not mean that everyone has to.

Maybe next time, Willie should call you first, since obviously, you are the only one allowed to have an opinion.

I would force all diners at my restaurant to purchase appetizers and desserts and several pricey cocktails whether they ate/drank them or not.
