Point of the chopped hand?

So I never understood the part where Luke chops off Vader's hand. Somehow that gave him the epiphany he needed to finally choose jedi instead of sith?

Luke sees that Vader's hand is mechanical. Luke's hand is also mechanical. This "Like Father Like Son" moment snaps him out of his rage and makes him realize that he's following the same path that Vader did.

reply

Symbolism. He cut off his father's mechanical hand. His right hand is also mechanical. If he keeps tapping into his anger, he will become like his father.

Me fail English? But, that's unpossible.

Lucas must be a psychologically unhealthy man lol. jedi aren't supposed to get mad ever. in fact they aren't supposed to get married, supposed to have any emotional attachments, and if they allow themselves to love, like say your mommy or wife in anakins case you go nuts, and yet having kids turns you good again lol. it makes so much sense haha

reply

in the end it's exactly that attachment that saves everything. Anakin's fierce loyalty/love for all those whom he cares about affects his decision making. It's partially why he chose to 'save' the Emperor from Mace Windu and it's exactly why he chose to save Luke from the Emperor.

reply

ironic. it's love that turns you evil, and love that turns you good lol

Lucas isn't even consistent with this "don't get mad" rule--Obi-won justifiably loses it when Qui-Gon is mortally wounded, did he eventually turn bad?

Luke had every right to go bonkers after Vader's threat.

Well lets be honest here, the star wars prequels were so bad, no rules matter.

Mediclorians, (WTF) trade federations (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz), trade rules ((Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz), galactic embargo's (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)?

Mention Qui-Gon (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) Any thing prequel (Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

How the *beep* did this guy churn out Star Wars in the first place?

reply

No, because he never fully turned to the dark side. As soon as Maul was defeated his anger subsided.

You missed the whole point of why they didn't want Jedi to have emotional attachments. As was seen with Anakin, his attachment to his mother led to the masscare of a tribe of Sand People. His attachment to Padme led him to helping eradicate the Jedi and bring about the Galactic Empire. His attachments led to his fear that he would lose the ones he loved. Without those attachments that stuff would have never happened. Of course, as the other poster said, his attachment to his son led him to become Anakin again and destroy the Emperor.

Point is that the Jedi Order had their rules about attachment to avoid the things that happened with Anakin and it's those rules that are the reason why Yoda was so apprehensive about allowing Obi-wan to train him in the first place.

reply

Without attachments, you also have nothing personal to fight for. Do you think the Allies would have won World War II if all the soldiers didn't have a personal stake in the fight? The whole of "no emotional attachments" is just dumb and it is SO obvious that Lucas was pulling all this out of his ass while he was writing the prequels.

It is just better to ignore the other trilogy as far as the original is concerned. They fracture their own canon at every turn and just fail as a backstory for Vader and the Jedi on every imaginable level.
