Then why did he jack him off when he was sleeping? When that scene happened I thought it was a very twisted show of motherly love. But if she was just pretending to be his mother, then why do it? It doesn't advance her agenda any further.
I disagree with the last claim. One doesn't form the kind of deep bond she was looking for without giving of oneself, as she explicitly acknowledges when she addresses her dead son. Her considerable intimacy with Kang-do was a knife that cut both ways.
Yes , but I didn't see i as a tell-tale sign just then. In retrospect, I can see what you mean, but then again , why do it at all? And if that signified that she wasn't his mom, then why did she resist the rape scene? or did she? I think the first and only tell-tale sign was that she didn't know where his birthmark was, but the rape scene and the masturbation scenes were just confusing and disturbing to me. Of course, I think the director does want to create this confused/sick feeling in us for uniqueness pruposes as well.
the masturbation and the rape scene stand in stark contrast to each other. If you remember closely the rape scene occurs at the very of their relation and it was the first time they had any real interaction. Needless to say at both the instances she must have had very different feeling for Gang-Do.
She helps him masturbate out of pity and the parental love that she had developed for him by them and it was not at all sexual for her in any kind of way. She also seemed somewhat comfortable with her action as Gang-Do was asleep and had no idea of what was going on.
The rape however was a different story altogether and has got to be embarrassing. No one is going take that easily as you can understand, as it wouldn't be rape then.
