As soon as I saw the dog I thought "Great...senseless dog slaughter coming up soon." It was actually quite a heartbreaking thing, and something good actually came out of it (the mutant baby). Usually horror movies use dogs as pointless gross-out death, but this was nothing of the sort. It was truly heartbreaking to watch (having put down 4 dogs over the course of my life, it never gets easier).
