Please don't make her speak with an American accent

Part of Rebel's wonderful charm is her British accent. Please let her drop the American accent. When we hear her speak naturally, she is so adorable and funny.

She's Australian......

We write the story...

reply

She's Australian...other than that side note, I completely agree!! I don't understand why they had her do an American accent.

reply

dolt. another person who thinks us brits and aussies are all the bloody same.

im about to watch the show - im hoping its good because no matter what accent she has, rebel wilson is hot. and id hate to avoid a show she is in.

reply

So sorry. I deserve the title of dolt, for sure! In my defense, I know her mostly from Bridesmaids. She played the sister of Matt Lucas, who's British, so perhaps she was doing a British accent for that film?

reply

Just exactly why do people have a problem with her speaking with an American accent? Did followers of "Fringe" feel the same way about Anna Torv. Or fans of "True Blood" over Ryan Kwanten? To name just two other Aussies in American shows.

I remember Ryan years ago in 'Home and Away' (an Aussie soap that is still going strong in Oz and the UK). A lot of well known Australian actors got their start on this soap. In fact Hugh Jackman was meant to play a role but opted to go to the West Australian Academy of Professional Acting (WAAPA) instead. Guy Pearce was in the other well known soap down under 'Neighbours'. Both soaps competed with each other in the same timeslot. Ryan was always a cute spunky guy and you could just read 'star' all over him back then. I knew he'd end up in Hollywood somehow.

or Jesse Spencer from Chicago Fire

I love her BUT the problem is she has a very bad American accent. And her Australian accent is far more charming/funny.

reply

Well, the Queen of England does own Australia, and Australia is peopled with the criminals of England's past, so in a way you're sort of the bloody same. ;)

Although I guess most people who confuse the two aren't operating on such a level. They just hear both accents and think they sound the same. XP

reply

First, I too am a dolt, I didn't realize she was Australian. But anyway, her American accent annoys me on this show because everything I've seen her in depicts her as a quirky foreign girl, which makes her so charming to me. It throws me off to hear her speak with an American accent. What really puzzles me is it seems unnecessary because of all the other British people on the show with her.

reply

Sorry dude but, "All the other British people on the show?" You wouldn't be implying by that that you think the two nationalities are the same?
I'm guessing that, if you were to tell any Lager sozzled Aussie he's British, then you may be in for hearing some very harsh language in return.

reply

Yikes, that's not what I meant. All I mean is why make her American if there are other non-Americans on the show.

reply

Point taken. What's interesting is that, in an interview I saw the other day, Liza Lapira says she is the only American on the show. Is that true?

reply

I just checked. The other main cast members are from England, Canada, and Australia (2).

Do you mean the characters? Only one regular character is from the U.K.

If by actors, then again, only one regular cast member is from the U.K.

Her natural accent would be much better, but I guess they're stuck now. Fact is that her American accent is not that great, and often the real accent slips out in various words. It just sounds wierd.

reply

You didn't even know she was Australian!

If Wilson needs to keep her native accent to be 'adorable and funny,' then she's not very charming or talented.

As annoying it is when Britons and Australians hog American roles, it's even worse when American and foreign viewers want these actors' roles to be suited to their nationality so they can keep their accents.

I can't talk for the British actors in the US, but a lot of Aussie actors are pursued/headhunted by American producers to come to America. Not in Rebel's case, but we do have great performers down here. Some choose to head to the US or UK for more notoriety (caught up in the fame thing), but some have been headhunted to play roles in America. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe were headhunted. I think Guy Pearce as well. He and Russell made LA Confidential together - a story of two LA cops. Why have non-Americans playing those roles? Might have something to do with both Aussie actors were nobodys in the US, so fresh faces, and yet they were highly skilled and very experienced actors when they came over, having worked in TV and film in Australia beforehand.

As for Rebel's decision to play an American in the role, she's playing a role in America, so it makes sense she chose to play an American. Rebel, being a producer, and a writer, made that decision herself. I've just seen the 1st ep with Jacki Weaver playing her American mum - what a hoot. Never heard her playing an American before. She is a veteran of stage and screen down here in Oz. Not sure if I liked her take of an American accent, but guess it is more to do with being used to her playing an Aussie. To an Aussie ear, Rebel sounds very American, but it's interesting reading the banter here how some Americans think she got it right and some think she got it wrong!

Yup. And I love how desperately annoyed and struggling American actors, and even casual American viewers, are beginning to notice the trend of cheap producers buying Aussie talent.

Hollywood has always loved gimmicky stunt casting of 'exotic' foreigners to play locals even when the foreigners totally lousy American accent risks sinking the entire production.

It's crazy considering how obsessed everyone is with profit and success.

reply

Sam Worthington was worthless at playing an American, haven't seen him in anything since Unleash the Krakens or whatever that movie was.

Well aside from the fact that she is Australian, her speaking with an American accent is this shows smallest problem right now.

I'm more concerned about what she's actually saying, period.
The material is not as good as the comedian. Which is odd considering her involvement.

Maybe someone else should write it.

i figure she could just get hit over the head with a frying pan or something, and develop some sort of condition allowing her to use her normal Kiwi accent like she's from London Canada... then we could stop worrying about this little issue that detracts from an otherwise great show
