Equilibrium

Does anyone else feel this is an Equilibrium rip off after reading the summary?

reply

It is impossible to create of story of a dystopian future without a insane ammount of ripped off material.

I honestly think if you timetravel to a random writer who is born in 1883 who has never seen movie, and ask him to write a story about a dystopian future we will see a lot of Clockwork Orange,1984,Brasil,Equilibrium,THX 1138 and no doubt many more dystopian movies/books.

It is a very boring theme because of the manditory-like (and now secondhand) elements. There is no way around it i think.

Well the majority of people seem to feel Equilibrium is far from original. The above poster is right, there are many films in this vein. If we are to give any book or film credit for starting the trend of this kind of subject matter it would likely be Orwell's '1984', which was first released as a book in the late 1940's. Giving Equilibrium credit for coming up with these kinds of ideas is giving that film far too much credit.

Came to the forum to see if it was just me. Yeah, I thought so, too.

It's actually in the movie where the maker found his idea.
At around 57min there is a guy showing a book to another. The book is called: Fahrenheit 451 from Ray Bradbury. Hence it's the mother of dystopia novels.
You should really take a look into the movie from Francois Fruffaut.

Yeah, I know, I've read it too. It's not the "mother" of all dystopian novels, anyway.

Plz do tell me witch one to look for.

reply

1984 hands down. That is the mother. 451 Fahrenheit is a bit up there as well.
