Commercially, what is the point of this series?

I like this series, don't get me wrong. I wish there were more programs like this.

I'm just curious: how do producers make money from a production like this? It doesn't seem too commercial/profitable. Because it's not family-friendly and many scenes are subtitled.

The sole purpose of TV shows is to make money & keep viewers for increased advertising fees. It was produced by Channel 4 in the UK, and just like any other TV series made by a TV station it's funded by commercials/advertisements.

It doesn't seem too commercial/profitable

They don't need to be (see above).

Sometimes if it's popular enough they are franchised & sold worldwide to other International Media companies. For example,it is now available on Netflix, and maybe other stations have bought it too.(*also there is DVD sales).
