Does he attack Paul on purpose?

Or was it a drunk-driving "accident"?

It appeared to be a deliberate attack to me, he went after Paul suspecting that he was trying to steal stuff from his home. Paul stationary when he was hit, and he was not in some dark alley where he would difficult to spot. May be he meant to scare him, but since he was tipsy, he ended up hitting him with the plow?

I don't think he meant to do it in the first place. But yes, he should have spotted Paul long before he hit him. Paul was acting strange with him though, especially at the bar when he asked him for money, and then left Bruce with the bill. I'm curious why Paul was in the middle of the road.

reply

He was in the middle of the road because he stopped to catch his breath. He was out driving looking for him, but didn't mean to hit him since he slammed on his breaks last minute.

Just rewatched the scene a few times and I don't know if it was on purpose or not but he definitely doesn't try to stop before hitting him. Maybe he was too drunk, maybe he didn't see him or was just distracted, really can't say but at least it is clear he didn't try to stop.

Which did you watch? The actual or the flashback? I noticed it on the flashback near the end of the movie, but I definitely didn't rewatch it a bunch of times to make sure. That being said, it was his own flashback and he could have been imagining that he hit the brakes (or I imagined it).

The actual, he does hit the brakes but it is after hitting him, you notice right away the second he hit the brakes.

I don't think theres a difference. I think the film revolves around perception, the eyes of judgement if you will.

My impression was it was an accident. He was drinking and visibility was very poor while the guy stood bent over in the middle of the road. Also, I know people have killed for less but Bruce didn't seem to be type to kill a guy for trying to steal some doll eyeballs. Maybe whip his azz, but kill unlikely.

"He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator."

It was an accident. He wasn't an aggressive person, which you can see throughout the movie, and was plagued by guilt. I think he went looking for him because he would be going to freeze to death in that weather without even a coat. He was very drunk and it was snowing heavily so he saw him too late, but he did hit the breaks before or the moment he crashed into him.

Now the more interesting question is did Paul deliberately keep standing there to get killed by him?

That is interesting, since when Paul first found him he was trying to kill himself. I think he did stay there on purpose.
