Kate cold as ice

It's best not to be too moral you cheat yourself out of too much life.

If I was married to Kate I would be more then bored. The women is cold as ice. When she decides to give Abbey a little sex she stops and tells Abbey to slow down and actually I think stops the whole process from continuing. Abbey actually says "please" to her. She tells Abbey whe wants no one in her life, you never know if she forgives her or not (it does not look that way to me). I know she is hurt but she does not seam to want to discuss it with Abbey or figure out that maybe she is the problem. If I'm Abbey I'm spending my afternoons with Sam!

Completely agree!

I think in the end they stay together. As you said, when Kate and her finally sat down to talk Kate said she didn't want anyone in her life. When they were together in the end before Abby went to her spin class I assumed that meant Kate may try to be more adventurous and Abby may or may not go back to being an escort. Not sure though. I hope she went back to it. She is seen with her friend setting up a new loft.

When you mentioned the new loft I think I figured the whole thing out. i think she continues to do what she was doing. Kate does not seem to be giving Abbey anymore attention and she mentions to her friend in the spin class that Kate wants to travel, she wants to put the porch on etc. Abbey said all she wants is a hot yoga class (with smile on her face) then it cuts into the new loft. I think Abbey continues her new life. Kate is too boring and does not give her any attention.

To me it seemed pretty clear that Kate was asexual.

By "I don't want anyone", she likely meant in the strict sense of physical intimacy. Kate obviously had feelings for Abbey, wanted to maintain a relationship with her and was hurt when she found out that Abbey had been cheating on her. But none the less, she had zero sex drive. Which is the case with some people IRL, whether gay or not.

There was obviously already some tension in their relationship. I got this impression in the scene where Abbey was making hesitant sexual advances towards the sleeping Kate. When Kate rolled over and reached into Abbey's pants to jerk her off, it seemed more like a rehearsed domestic chore than anything else.

Kate going back to sleep before she even got started, was pretty telling of how little personal interest she had in doing it. She was trying to help Abbey let off some steam as a favor (and as a way to shut Abbey up, so she could sleep in peace), but didn't really have anything emotional or physical invested in it.

Most couples don't have perfectly matching sex drives and people usually try out of concern to adapt to their partner's level as best as they can. Usually it's the more eager part who adapts and suppresses their own desire, so as not to be a burden to their less interested partner.

Abbey had already done this, but it was obviously hurtful and deteriorating on her self esteem that her wife never desired her (even though Kate did show other non- phukk oriented signs of affection). So when Abbey eventually got the opportunity to get her satisfaction someplace else, she took it.

I was surprised first that Abbey established a relationship at all with a partner who never puts out, but then I remembered that it's easy to gloss over a lot in the initial stages when you're still crazily in love.

Abbey probably didn't care at first that she didn't get as much sex as she expected. However... what little she did get was from her beloved, and hence it was glorious.

Kate probably had a lot of sex (by her own estimate) at first, even though she wasn't really interested. She still wanted her beloved to be happy and putting out even though she didn't fully want to, was a small price to pay.

Eventually the novelty wears off and you realize that all the minor, seemingly irrelevant annoyances with the other person are actual problems. But by that time you are usually tied down with kids and mortgages and what not.

They should have had that discussion when they first met, but as usual: we're not all that bright when we're madly in love.

It's interesting that everyone is assuming that Kate never had much interest in sex and they should have discussed it at the beginning of their relationship. I'm thinking, they were probably very active in the beginning...but Kate looks to be around the age of menopause...so maybe her lack of interest, especially her saying "I don't want anyone" indicates menopause...and it may pass at some point.

Thanks for this discussion, I too was puzzled by the ending. It seemed to me that they stay together but Abby continues with her double life.
