Exasperating question about Kate (spoilers!)

HOW (in the heck) did Kate find out about Abby cheating!?!? Was it really just the "woman's intuition" thing that Abby implied to Johnathan (the contractor) after they showcased the loft or did somebody tell her!? Because that's what I thought at first. Kate was acting normal - they go to the children's recital - THEN Kate starts acting funny. The next scene - Abby is in the car on her way to her next dalliance in NYC and there is the phone voice over: Abby asking her where did she go and Kate replying "Oh you know I had that call." Hmmmmmmm....

Call? I thought that's what did it. I mean - how else did she get THE KEYS!? Only Kate and Johnathan would've had the keys, right? At first I thought it was Sam who snitched - because she was mad at how weird kate acted in the supermarket when she came upon her and her husband. Then I thought it might be the blonde chic (Sam's friend) - the one who told Kate at the dinner party that she needs to *beep* Abby more. She's a busybody. But Kate knew something in detail BEFORE she got to that loft at the end of the movie and just seeing how Abby decorated the loft isn't necessarily going to clue her in to the full facts of Abby's cheating - maybe that Abby was setting up a separate life/mindset outside of the family..maybe! But knowledge that Abby was having affairs with multiple women?? I don't think so. So..who snitched..if anybody. and how the heck did Kate get the keys. I really thought it was after the recital and someone called kate and told - but I'm uncertain and confused on that point. Anybody?

It's best not to be too moral you cheat yourself out of too much life.

I think it was the womens intuition thing. Kate knew Abbey pretty good and once she saw the loft and how it was set up she figured it out. As far as the keys maybe the door was left open and if it was locked she would of just knocked. I really don't think anyone told Kate what was going on she just figured it out for herself. I think by the end of the story they make it pretty clear that Kate will remain cold as ice and Abbey will continue to fix up the new apartment and will go back to the new life she found.

That's an excellent question; I was puzzled as well. I think it was a combination of things: the blonde's comment about doing her wife more; the way Abby was uncomfortable in the apartment when they were showing it to the client; Abby's call and comment that she "should be back in time to pick up the kids."

At one point I assumed Justin told her because she cut him out of the profits, but since she was still using him as a contractor that seems unlikely. A more complete explanation would have been nice.

All I could surmise from when Kate knelt in front of the bed Abby was on.... Abby should have waited for Kate to speak - should have waited to hear her say ANYTHING or whatever she was needed to say. She could not help but blurt out "I'll do whatever you want me to do."

I think that destroyed the draw bridge she had worked so subconsciously hard to provide for Kate to walk back into the land of the "feeling" upon, by saying those words. Kate heard those words from Abby in an entirely different context from what Abby actually meant. What little sexuality Kate still feels (possibly from menopause?) may have been smothered in that moment. She still wanted Abby, but did not want Abby to feel like she had to be her.... escort. (I don't think that's what Abby was actually saying.) Now, being true to whatever vow they took, Kate feels that she cannot want anyone.
Kate is the one I cried for.

Kate is a divorce lawyer. Do you think she never heard the excuse "I'm going to the city/gym/etc; I'll be back in time to pick up the kids"? Then she got there and found a naked Abby sprawled out on the bed and a silk robe nearby. Considering they don't live there, the only logical explanation for the scene Kate found was sex. I doubt she ever finds out the extent of what Abby got up to.
