Why is this movie labelled a comedy?

I think it does the movie a great disservice. People expect something they won't get. It would have been smarter to just label i "drama". It has its funny moments, but they are few and far a part in my opinion. I did like the movie though.

I thought it was easily more comedic than anything else. The comedy comes first with this, but the underlying theme of sexism in that industry (and by the father) is there most of the way through it. That underlying theme doesn't come into play as strongly as in the last half hour or so of the movie, but even then, I think it's way more comedic (and does a good job of it)

Definitely not a comedy. A dramatic movie with a few funny things happening in it isn't a comedy; that's just life.

If this had not been billed as a comedy, I would have liked it a lot more. In the end, I felt robbed.

That is ridiculous reasoning to dislike a film.

What are some of your favorite comedies?

reply

Why? Its marketed one way and turned out to be another. Its a bait and switch, you wouldnt dislike a store that advertised a product as $1 then you get there and its $10? That would be a ridiculous reason to dislike a store to you?

I thought it was a comedy. Like "Anchorman: Ron Burgundy" there is a group of good old boys who believe they have an automatic lock on all jobs in their field like its a clubhouse.

Complete with smirking nasty sexist comments. This movie came without the seltzer down the pants slapstick in Anchorman. That's the difference.

I don't know everything. Neither do you.

reply

True, but $1 vs $10 are facts. Whether a movie is 'funny enough to be considered a comedy' is a matter of opinion. I thought it was a funny movie that had some dramatic elements rather than the other way around. I was not disappointed.

Your opinion may differ. To be honest, given the amount of marketing hyperbole that accompanies most movies today, I'm not sure how any movie can live up to its own hype.

It's a romantic comedy.

I don't think anyone knows what a comedy is anymore. It's not a synonym for "farce."

Cept for "Delta Farce"! That movie rocked!!

A sincere thank you for this warning. I was looking for a real laugh out loud comedy to watch with a group of friends who wanted fun, and I wasn't sure if this was a good choice or not. I quickly browsed this boards and saw your post, so not a good movie for tonight's bill. Just wanted to say I appreciate you letting us know.

I thought it was pretty funny myself. It was very light and quirky. Certainly more comedy than drama imo.

Ditto. I didn't find it dramatic so much as sort of "slice of life" and ... yeah, comedic. I had no expectations and enjoyed its ability to not take itself too seriously. I laughed quite a few times; way more than I can say for a lot of straight-up comedies that've been coming out over the past ... lot of years.

i agree, if it wasn't for "Carol" I wouldn't have watched the whole film
if it wasn't labeled as "Comedy" it would've been much better, I just wanted to watch a "Comedy" and this wasn't like that for me
The movie didn't show much of "Louise" or the problem with her father either, I would've loved it if they showed more of that.

"ok"

There's not much drama in it except for the minor subplot about her sister and her husband. More comedy than anything else.

"Passion is just insanity in a cashmere sweater!"

It's more comedic than dramatic. It may not be gut busting funny, but it's a pretty lighthearted film.

Labels are subjective and I have always accepted them as such. Just gimme the flick and I'll decide.
I do agree sometimes it's hard to understand how movies get "labelled" comedy or drama or whatever. I often SMH at some of them.

Like the movie BTW
