A shame this didn't take off. I am in awe of this film.

For a first time writer/director, you usually see a plot that drags, is edited badly, has fluff characterization or plot, has an unsatisfying or too satisfying ending, weak acting. There are alot of indy films that, as you're watching it, you appreciate the effort and novelty, but its systemic flaws make it a failed project.

This film has none of those flaws.

However, it tanked at the box office because apparently audiences are too dumb or lazy to find gold nuggets like this one among the many bad offerings. Or, perhaps it was just marketed badly.

If this had been written by a "name" or starred Brad Pitt, it would've made $200M.

As I was watching it, I was just in awe of how someone wrote and directed (oh, and starred in) such a great first-time film.

Sad it didn't take off. Hopefully, it can gain a following on Netflix, etc.

I'm with you 100%. Probably the reason it didn't is all the Sottos out there that still pervade the industry. My favorite coming-of-age movie since Perks of Being a Wallflower, though this was really a coming-into-her-own movie rather than a coming-of-age movie. Lake Bell is a genius to totally pull this off, writing acting, and directing. Also loved the Geena Davis cameo and the Adonis character, Gustav.

I couldn't have said it better myself. This movie exceeded my expectations 10 times over, and I would have loved to see it do a lot better at the box office. Lake Bell was awkwardly pleasant too. My respect for her just tripled.

Bad movie is bad, and it's starting to show in the imdb rating.

Turn on the television any evening and you hear trailers and promos for new product all night long.

Agree. Hope to see more like this from Lake Bell.

Darling, nothing is final 'til you're dead, and even then, I'm sure God negotiates.

Spoilers here:

I think it was ludicrous that the three of them all felt like it was going to be a "best one wins" situation. Anyone in the industry knows that everything is based on intended audience, demographics, and marketing strategy. The Geena Davis explanation is supposed to be some great revelation?

It was a comedy, not a documentary. There's artistic license taken throughout.

I don't watch movie trailers, so I had no clue what to expect, especially since the IMDB description was so brief.

I would gladly recommend this movie to anyone I know. If they can't appreciate it, well, that's a hint - maybe we have different tastes in films.
