My problem. Carol was the best voice. It was the best choice. So the comedown fells forced. Why have her do the best job, and then pretend it wasnt? She was the only one right for the role. It makes no sense movie when geena davis then delivers her. Smackdown. It just seems mean.
The point was Katherine (Geena Davis) did not think she was the best voice but selected her based on her sex. Essentially she was an affirmative action selection and didn't earn it. It was ironic due to the "boys club" theme all the way through the rest of the movie.
We did hear all the auditions, though. Not all the way through, but we heard them sequentially as each was being recorded.
I don't even know what "best" means when it comes to teaser trailers. About the only reasonable thing is that it would sell the most tickets. And I think Carol's voice over WOULD have sold the most tickets.
I think the Geena Davis Character was just feeling bitchy, or was irritated by the young pup and wanted it not to go to her head. I think she wanted her to understand that there are levels within levels, and it wasn't all about her.
We all have our reasons for doing what we do, and they aren't always sensible, or true.

Agree. After all the profound compliments she bestowed, she reeled back a bit to keep it real. And because Carol was so stupid to say “I know I was the best” that’s not something you say in any professional context.
I think the movie exec just didn’t want her to walk away with her head swelled up. She gave three phenomenal compliments first, then put s little pepper on it to keep it real. A great scene, the power discussion.
