Who would have thought.........

That it would be really good lol
Admittedly it was far too many ideas and genres and characters in one small place but overall it had way more hits then misses and i loved the crow theme pay off, very nifty.
Also who knew Asian teens were so attractive. All the men were nice looking and super healthy and the girls wer gorgeous and like models (probably as they all were but doesn't hurt as they all ended up as rat bate lol).

How lovely to see rotters and brats alike getting their come uppance for once. Id love to see this remade for the west, for the UK specifically where all those nasty chavs and scum bags could be rounded up an punished for bulling, stealing, drugs, public disorder, disturbance of the peace, vandalism etc. all the small things which make all our lives a little worse from sheer selfishness.
Do not let anyone tell you this film is gory or too violent or tasteless as it simply isn't. You never see anything and when you finally have killings they are cgi or squibs and so over the top that they are cartoon like a Marvel super hero punch which sends you through a building, now that is violent! or transformers taking out entire city blocks lol those are the dumb video nasty films (independence day!!!) which have zero context to their relentless and numbing slaughters. This film had reason for the kills and a long long slow character build up and back story.

Far from perfect but other posters claimed there was no reason for the killings but they did not pay attention as the film is about a psycho who constantly struggles out of situations he creates and the cost of life is small until he can no longer escape so the cost goes up exponentially and the result is he fails which is just.

Nice to see this director back on form as well....an easy B-.

I think you missed the point of the movie if you think it was about 'punishing' brats and chavs... That's the kind of thought process that sometimes leads to psychotic murderers like what we saw in the movie. The movie is more or less based on real mass shootings that have targeted children over the years, specifically the Norwegian massacre by Anders Breivik, who believed he was 'punishing' the teenagers for being 'brats' who were supporting 'the enemy' and 'betraying' their nation.

Nevertheless, I do agree with you about the criticisms being misguided and missing the point. Clearly the realism and the way it reminds us of recent mass shootings has made some people feel uncomfortable about this movie, so they'd rather see it as some kind of shallow slasher movie instead. But to me, this movie is one of the best horror movies I've seen in years, and what made it all the more horrific was its uncompromising realism, without relying on cliched deus ex machina tropes, but showing us the reality of what it's really like to be in such a situation.

Jag85 get's it right in his 2nd paragraph.

Movie is an 8 and had me shaking my head at the over the top 'magnificent' violence. True to form Miike!

Realism? What realism? The whole mass murder sequence was ridiculous beyond belief BUT I think that was director's intention. Imo this movie's only purpose was to piss off the audience. I see this movie as a black comedy and that sequence as a twisted sense of humor.

...And you think Anders Breivik's mass murder against 70+ teenagers wasn't "ridiculous beyond belief"? Deny it as much as you want, but that's reality. And if you think the similarity to that Norway tragedy is unintentional, then how do you explain the presence of Norse mythology in the film? It's clear that this film was influenced by what happened in Norway back in 2011. If you fail to see the parallels to real tragic mass shootings that have happened around the world, then clearly you've missed the point of the film. The fact that so many of us actually enjoyed and laughed while the mass murder unfolded on screen probably tells us something about ourselves, so I suppose it would be easier to dismiss the movie as just pure escapist fantasy rather than accepting the reality.

Sure it's a reference to real life mass murders that's obvious. I mean the event itself is mass murder in the movie so it's impossible not to see it , but not because it's realistic. Btw what kind of weapons did those real life shooters used in their mass murders? In this movie it felt ridiculous because the dude had to reload after every 2 shots (if I recall correctly) because of the type of the rifle and it takes a long time so much so that they could have easily taken him down during those reloads. But not a single person tries that. The guy even takes his time, he wasn't even in a hurry. THAT felt really stupid. If those real life mass murderers also used a similar weapon, like in the movie had to reload for almost a minute after just every 2 shots and took their time doing so, then I might agree with you.

It's your arguments that are unrealistic. How do you expect terrified, unarmed kids to be able to do anything against a gunman armed with a shotgun? Do you even know anything about the 2011 Norway massacre? If you've seen the accounts of some of the survivors, then you'll realize that the way Anders Breivik carried out his massacre is very similar to the way Seiji carried out his massacre in the climax of this film. Breivik was pretending to be a security guard, and was trusted by the students, much like how Seiji earned the trust of the students as a teacher. And more importantly, Breivik also used a shotgun during his massacre, something which you claim to be 'unrealistic' despite the fact that this actually happened in real life. I think you need to realize that the real world doesn't function according to your unrealistic movie rules.

He used a Ruger Mini 14. You're accusing me of being lost in a fantasy world where movie rules apply, but ironically you yourself defending some movie's "realism". This is also a movie too.

I think it also has to be noted that its not just about the Norway massacre but most American massacres too, hense the American flag and American music references and the fact most of them take place in actual schools. I guess its Miike's way of saying sort your lifes out America this is what you are doing to your own people.
