Any 21 Jump Street fans disappointed?

Since the first time I saw 21 Jump Street, I thought it was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Then tonight I went into this movie hearing that it was critically acclaimed and largely considered an improvement on the first movie, but I walked out feeling disappointed.

I thought the movie started off on the right foot, became a little tedious as time went on, and then grew stronger as the climax came, but not enough to save the film. The first movie seemed a little more relatable and realistic, while this just seemed over the top as if there was no way it could really happen. And I just didn't laugh as much. It's possible that I just wasn't in the right movie-watching mood today because I was sort of sleepy, so maybe I should watch it again later.

And I didn't actually hate the movie, I would give it about a 6/10 but I gave the first one a 9/10.

Sorry, but I didn't feel the same way. I loved it about as much as the original.

Have to agree with OP, something about 22 was different to the first

I think I liked 22 more

Totally agree with you. I am a fan of the first one and these jokes were over the top and tedious.

It was also really gay, like wtf. In the first one it was a bit more mature and the jokes were great, really disappointed

Like gay gay or stupid gay?

reply

There is no such thing as "stupid gay"
Unless you are a moronic teenager.

reply

Unfortunately there is .... I was being silly about it but yeah there is. Maybe I'm a bad gay but I allow it with younger friends in their early 20s. Maybe I shouldn't but I figure I know what they mean.

reply

Early 20's? I've not heard anyone over 20 use the word "gay" to mean "stupid"
Maybe it is an American thing? Either way it's obnoxious. "Dis movie is gay!" Come on, I mean how is that not a repulsive way to speak? lol

reply

Yeah it's pretty bad and it really makes those who use it that way sound extremely unintelligent.

I'm glad I went in not having heard anything about it. My expectations weren't too high because it was a sequel. I just hoped they could recapture some of what made me love 21.

I loved 22. I was pleasantly surprised at how much, because it was a sequel.

Totally agree OP. I was ready to give 22 a 6/10 too (I gave 21 a 9) but the credits scene (which was unfortunately the funniest part of the movie IMO) made me move it up a notch. I just didn't feel the same magic as I did the first time. You can quote the funny parts for hours from 21 but I can probably count all the funny parts in 22 on one hand. Still a good movie just nowhere near as funny or good as the first. Still lovd Lord and Miller though and have high hopes for their next project.

I loved 21 jump street too. But I gotta disagree with you, I thought this one was almost as good. Definitely a worthy sequel.

reply

I liked it but not nearly as much as 21

21 js - 9/10
22 js - 7/10

Its time to play.

I thought it was great! I was apprehensive when I heard they were making a sequel, especially because 21 seemed to hit all the right notes. They were really self-aware that it was a remake, so they created original characters within a preexisting world. They also poked fun at it. 22 did the same thing, because again, they knew sequels are kind of lame. They made fun of it for most of the movie. And the credits were hilarious!
