Did Cameron die? Who took him?

I've watched the episodes but I think I might have missed a bit because I went into the kitchen and then when I came out it I looked at the TV and it just showed two graves!! Did one belong to Cameron? And who kidnapped him and why? I don't get it.

I don't think Cam actually was kidnapped- the scene we see with him being carried away was in Eve's dream- that's why she woke up in such a panic.

When they find his body, there is no talk about evidence or opening the case, which you would think the police would do straight away for a murder. Seemed to me that they viewed it as an accident and the case was closed.

In the book, it's made clear that Cam wasn't kidnapped and simply wondered off and fell in the canal by accident. I think the film was going for the same conclusion but missed out the part that confirmed it!

It's been a while since I read the book, I thought that it was confirmed that it was an accident when he talks to Eve through the psychic as well? But I could be wrong.

I guess the film is open to interpretation, as it doesn't state either way, but for me I didn't think Cam was abducted and murdered because it just seemed so pointless.

As you said, it's not important to the plot how or why he died, so why change it?

Also, if they did intend for him to have been murdered, they totally ignored the aftermath and consequences of it, which is incredibly lazy writing.

It may not be important to the plot who killed him and why, but to not even mention a police investigation into it is unrealistic and unsatisfying to the viewer. Also, there was no real change to the parents grieving process once the body was found.

Before, they were grieving the loss of a child- very different emotions to grieving an unsolved murdered child.

None of these things were explored in the film and although they didn't need to be, they should have been in order to complete the story, otherwise they have simply made an unnecessary change and not even attempted to see it through. Like I said, pointless and lazy.

At the end of day, it all comes down to personal opinion, but for me, it just makes more sense, from what I saw, that he died in an accident.

Yeah, that’s a very good point. Overall the whole Cam situation seemed very confused to me in this series, like they didn't really know where they were going with it.

Don't read the spoiler if you haven't read the book!

The biggest problem was that they chose not to kill Stefen, which meant that they couldn't use his ghost for the Cam 'sighting' and the voice that Eve heard. To just say 'it was the orphans' was very disappointing. I don't know why they did that; again it was completely needless and added nothing to the plot (except a vaguely happier ending) and took so much away. The whole point was that Stefan latched onto Eve because he (or at least his body) was in a similar place to Cam, wanting to be found. Not only did this cut out a lot of opportunities for creepy moments, but it made the ending just seem stupid and make no sense as the connection between the two was never explained. It's a shame they chose to go that way...

I can't really remember the details of the conversation thing- I think there was something about him falling in and getting trapped under a shopping trolley and that’s how he drowned, but I'm not sure, my copy of the book is in storage, which is annoying as I really want to read it now!

Haha, yeah, I will definitely be looking for it next time I get down to the storage unit- downsizing is a pain!

Oh, right...I think I might read the book myself! :D

The book is definitely much clearer! There were a lot of changes made in this series, many of which seemed unnecessary and made things more complicated than they needed to be.

I did enjoy it, but I don't really understand why they didn't just stick to the original story.

Also the book is way more intense and creepy!

reply

Yeah, when they make books into series and films it's never as good.
Think I'll give the book a go :D

Thats true, the only series I've seen that's better than the book is Dexter.

Other than that, book always wins for me!

definitely!

The TV series makes it equally clear it was an accident, as the polieman tells Gabe almost verbatim what has been quoted from the book.

Yes, the line in the mini-series is almost identical as the one quoted from the book up-thread, so also I'm not sure why other people didn't catch that it was an accident rather than anything having been done to him.
