Magic Finger?

Can anyone explain what the magic finger bit was about. Both their fingers looked normal to me.

It looked like the little fingers on their left hands only had one joint instead of the usual two? or something like that?
I read the book years ago but can't remember anything about fingers.

I prefer Imaginality to reality.

reply

Ok, it's looks like 2 joints to me, but thanks for the reply! I thought it might be significant.

I've just had a look at Sunday's episode and the little finger of the mother and Cam are supposed to be the same, it means they have psychic gifts. But like you Bogwoppit I can't see what it is about the little fingers that's supposed to be different from everyone else's.

I tried to look this up and only found one forum somewhere that said their fingers bend the wrong way... but I couldn't see anything like that and I stared at her hand for ages! It's so frustrating, I wish they'd just left it out.

reply

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one intrigued by this, they seemed to focus on the fingers as if it were an important point.

The middle bone on their left hand is shorter than the one on their right.

Huh, what an anticlimax! Yes, i see it now, thanks for clearing that up!

...still wondering why they bothered with it at all?!

reply

Maybe it'll turn out to be really important later on. Or maybe they were just trying to make a point about the mother and son being especially connected, and explain why Cam can talk to his mum and not his dad?

reply

I get the whole 'connected' thing, but I feel like there must have been a better way to do it, as it was so difficult to see on screen. Perhaps they could have used eye colour, which people are more likely to notice (ie. they both have one brown eye, one blue). I get that the finger thing was in the book, but in the book it might have made perfect sense, whereas on the TV show it didn't work visually--hence this thread!

reply

As I remember it in the book both Mother and Son had one little finger shorter than the other. It is a quite important plot mechanic in the book and the mini-series as this is how Gabe is 100% sure that the body found in the canal is that of Cam.

reply

Thanks alissende, I still don't see why it's magical!

reply

It's not really magical. I think Eve just said that to help Cam see his difference in a positive light. You know how adults will tell young kids with an illness, deformity or injury how whatever is wrong with them is something special and/or "magic" just to make them feel better and help them cope? I think Eve telling Cam that his shorter than usual small finger was "magic" was sort of along those lines....

reply

Eve told the nursery staff that she and her son could read each others thoughts and had a special connection. And that was before he went missing. She was obviously delusional and bonkers the whole time.

reply

Thanks alissende, had been looking at the video for ages and just couldn't figure it out. I see it now!

reply

Well that was fairly awful, but at least the finger got another mention!
