Spector Is Highly Intelligent but Made Stupid Mistakes

The biggest mistake Spector made was actually going to the police after Sally Ann told him too. He could have just lied to her and told her he went. Of course, then we'd have a totally different story but it always bothered me the character did this. He lied to her about his whereabouts all the time. Why not now? And then agreeing to give the DNA sample? What the hell?

Also, Spector was a a talented artist and writer who directed his talents towards the darkness that inflicted him. I know it's odd for me to say this, but I wonder what he could have done in his "good life" with his talent? Graphic artist or ad copy writer instead of bereavement counselor?

It may be a credit to Dornan's acting but I hurt for little Peter. What might have been if he hadn't been orphaned and abused...

Sally explained it in the scene. When they saw Paul and Olivia on the tape she told him that he needed to go to the police. When he asked her why she basically said that if he didn't clear himself on the video then people that knew them would tell the police "hey I know him" and they would be coming to the house asking Paul why he didn't come identify himself. So basically it would make him look more like a suspect if he didn't than if he did.

And then agreeing to give the DNA sample?

How suspicious would it make him look if he didn't agree to take one?

The psychiatrist basically guessed that the reason why he was a bereavement counselor was because he knew what it felt like to loose someone. But if his mother wouldn't have killed herself I doubt he would have taken that line of work. I still don't think he would do something in art but probably something else.

I agree. We knew in the first season that his mother died and he was brought up in orphanages and that alone was hurtful but we didn't know the severity of it until he told himself what had happened.

I know why Sally thought he should go but she was dealing with hypotheticals. He could also have lied to any neighbors who asked him if he went to the police.

As for the DNA, better to look "suspicious" than seal your fate, which is what he did. Stella also said he may have done it because he thought he was smart enough to fool them but I think this is Cubitt explaining away an illogical plot point.

I understand these actions were necessary to move the story forward within the time constraints of 5 or 6 episodes. If Spector were an actual person, I doubt he would have acted as he did on these two counts.

I guess I'm the one dealing with hypotheticals now...

The concern is over the people who go to the police and say, "Hey I know that guy." Not the people who go to Paul.
