I haven't read the book, so...

I don't know whether this is just another example of poor adaptation to the teleplay, but why, having seen Ameerah trying to smother Emily with a pillow, would Lord Walderhurst just send her back to India with Hester?

reply

I KNOW.

That was insanely stupid. I was hoping Ameerah would fall from the window or something. =P

reply

Ditto. But I figured deportation must've been preferred to Ameerah becoming some sort of burden to the state. I finally read the book which is very different from the film in many ways, one of which is that the 3 conspirators all end up back in India, for a while at least.

The pillow smothering was absurd. In the book, Ameerah is very careful to set up "accidents" that could not be traced back to her: a knob lying in the middle of the staircase, a weakened railing on Emily's favorite bridge. That is why Emily couldn't accuse her of anything. Although she became suspicious after the bridge incident, Emily didn't even know for certain that there was a plot until Hester confessed everything.
