Bret Easton Ellis has not shown even the slightest mark of a talented screenwriter. American Psycho, the film (which he didn't write), was ok in a hilarious, campy cult, sort of way. All other movies, either based off his work, or written by him, have been, in my opinion, awful.
I can't judge him as a novelist because I haven't read him, but...Honestly, I stick with the classics. All I've read for the past two months is Shakespeare, Cormac McCarthy, and Nabokov, and it's not because I'm a snob, but it's like: if I'm going to put the time in to read, whatever I'm reading better be damn well good. Same with films. I'm going to watch Ingmar Bergman over some mumble core director who's only known because he's "groundbreaking" or whatever any/everyday. finally, of famous writers and personal friends both, those I respect don't have much respect for BEE, and those who do have respect for him, well...
Ok, BEE out of the way, this whole project seems incredibly gimmicky. Lindsey Lohan? Even if she is a solid actress, nobody is hiring her for her acting ability, they're hiring her for press. James Deen, the porn star? I've seen him act in porns...he's a porn actor...
And finally, the thing that really pisses me off and the reason I will not watch this even if it is hailed a classic (obviously not happening): All these famous millionaires used kickstarter.com to help fund the thing. Any single one of the top 10 most important people involved with this film could have funded the thing quite easily out of their own pocket. And I firmly believe that kickstarter (and the like) money should go to unknown, upstart filmmakers and artists, not multi-millionaire celebrities. Once you have 10 mil or more, you should fund your own work so that producer/kickstarter money can go to people who need it. This will never happen because most rich famous "artists" would rather part with their vision than their money. But it is a firm belief of mine and I'm sticking to it.
