Lee Ingleby: exquisite as always

He's truly one of the most subtle actors of this generation. It's always a pleasure and a revelation to watch him at work.

The film itself is sort of haphazard and unconvincing. The camerawork, however, is in many ways extraordinary, and there are any number of perfectly gorgeous choices in lighting, framing, and tracking. Shots on the river are especially tasty (as is Ingleby in the final moments of the movie), and there's one really compelling shot of a bus in which, as the bus ostensibly drives closer and closer to the viewer, the camera moves twice as quickly away, keeping us a bit off balance and distancing us from the action and its consequences.

In all, a lovely movie to look at, just not all that interesting to think about.
