The Zach factor, + Beckanne lacking partner
Watched all of season 1; I've only watched the first episode and a half of season 2 so far, but am already very annoyed by Zach. It's a shame that the only openly gay male dancer they're featuring (as far as I've seen till now) is such a standard issue, busy-body, drama queen, with apparently not a lot to compensate for that, or smooth over it. He has such a lousy attitude (of mind and spirit, not leg) and an underwhelming physique and appearance. (He does appear to have some technique and ability, based on what little actual dancing they've shown him doing.) His hysterical needy-nosiness is just too pathetic, and life's too short. What a shame they waste screen time on his diva-drama crap--a little bit would be fine (though, again, I wish they'd feature another gay male dancer as well, to avoid such an extreme stereotype being the only representation), but there was far too much of it in Episode 1 and the beginning of Episode 2.
Meantime, watching the early CINDERELLA sessions, from which the two leads will be chosen, I can't help but wonder why Beckanne didn't ask Adam and Ms. Somes if she could bring along a company guy to learn with and partner her during rehearsals. Some guys might not be willing to put in the time and work for something they're not going to get to perform, but (schedules allowing) I bet far more of them would be very willing or eager, for the experience and for the chance to make a good impression, and possibly just to be helpful or to get close with the lovely Beckanne. Every dancer should know that one of the best strategies for getting ahead in a company is to learn, and be able to dance and teach, every role you possibly can; stories are endless about dancers getting their sudden, unexpected break because no principal or soloist was available to perform a part, but some lowling knew it and could jump in. In NYCB, Peter Martins has even put a new apprentice in a lead role when such a situation came up, because of having seen her do a great job with it in the student showcase some months before. Anyway, Beckanne doesn't seem too shy and retiring, so I'd think she'd be bold and request the right to BHOP (bring her own partner).
Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.
