? regarding the main characters Possible Spoilers of course

Not sure if there were scenes left on the cutting room floor which demonstrate her character to be more "physical" than the other gals, nonetheless was I alone in walking away from this movie believing Mary(Aiicya Denham Carey)to be the most staunchly rebellious and questioning of church doctrine of all the girls? In one scene towards the end, she even chides her father and stepfather into compliance by reciting a Bible verse of her own and it's Kane's character who later looks to her in awe whilst declaring: "I've never heard you talk to your parents like that." Did I misread the filmmakers depiction herein?
