What kind of message is this movie trying to send?

That molestation, paranoia, murder and fear mongering are all justified because in the end, evil DOES exist? Because despite the pastor taking advantage of those young girls by molesting them to "look" for the devil, the prophecy came true which makes the audience think everything he was doing throughout the movie (ostracizing a young woman clearly in danger, having underage women undress before him to touch their private parts, plot the murder of infants, continue ignoring the disappearance of children by failing to involve police or search parties etc) was justified because he was just trying to keep the devil out?

Really bizarre message to send even if it wasn't intentional...

Yeah that was a terrible ending. First because it's so damn predictable. And then because it somehow justified all the BS that was done before by supposedly "holy" people.

The rest of the movie was pretty boring but that was just the cherry on the BS cake. I guess they were trying to be The Omen but failed even worse.

I don't mind a bit of predictability if the movie is well made. But I also disliked the whole 'devil is real' thing at the end. It would have been far creepier as a psychological thriller about the evils of religious cults.

I simply am not there...

Or, and here is a wild idea, it's just a movie. Without to 'message'. Seriously do you really think the people involved gathered and said "hey, great idea, let's tell the world rape and exploitation is okey by having a movie about it".

People who think movies like this are trying to send such messages really boggle me. How do you actually survive in everyday life?

I'm having trouble with a patient of mine; he's a teenage drug addict who's being molested. By me.

I'm so sorry you enjoy mindless entertainment but some of us enjoy dissecting films and thinking about what we just watched - hence why message boards like this exist to DISCUSS them. 

Thank you my dear logical friend... THANK YOU!

lol yeah the ending sucked really hard, it would have worked better as a drama with most horror aspects cut out... It could still have dealt with the same lunacy and even murders just make it a little more realistic and yeah a completely different ending

We crash into each other, just so we can feel something.

Not to give the film too much credit, but I view it more like this: the prophecy WAS bogus, but between the mother "calling the devil" and all her actions and the abuse of the girls, they actually caused it to happen.

A friend recommended the movie to me and it was just horrible to watch! I couldn’t wait for it to be over. The description I read said they were Amish. The writer either had no knowledge about the Amish or thought he’d make a cult who dressed Amish. I don’t know. I could make no sense of the plot let alone the message. I was glad when the movie ended.
