The Tim Sandlin Novel

Just found out my favorite Sandlin novel, "Sex and Sunsets," was made into a movie. Saw the trailer and was surprised that the main character, not named Kelly Palomino, is a failed writer of a book called, "Sex and Sunsets." With the similar design of the recent Sandlin covers. Can someone please explain if this movie has a meta joke running throughout to explain this.
