That bastard Rhodes! !

When the boy was having a history lesson from his mom she refers to the "bastard Rhodes". She obviously is referring to Cecil Rhodes who colonised much of Africa for the British Empire many years ago ( Rhodesia now called Zimbabwe etc. ). I assume the word bastard wasn't in the text book and was added by the mom who is American and wouldn't be aware of the history of Rhodes to form an opinion. Therefore the scriptwriter of the film Richard Curtis added it obviously, this has bugged me ever since, cant he keep his chamoagne socialist left wing views to himself and just tell a story without ramming his political views down peoples throat? Anyone else notice it or am I mad? Im not a right wing loonie either, just sick of rich left wing snooty condescending tossers like Curtis.

noticed that.

The whole crappy film was tainted with left wing PROPOGANDA. When the candy ass teacher was trying to make the kids believe in that criminal Nelson Mandela against their will is what bugs me and when the *beep* mother is trying to teach her queer kid is hilarious. What a stupid film. I want my time back the scenery held me

I think Curtis was right on.

Its that man again!!

There was also some education reform bs stuck in there too. Like anyone that wealthy would send their precious only child to a public school especially if he had learning disabilities. Such a pile of crap. Too bad it could have been a good story but after that , I quit watching,.

Good grief, such utter nonsense here! Rhodes was many things in his life, some perhaps admirable, but he was undeniably an unrepentant white supremacist, which to most people who aren't racist fools, makes him very definitely a bastard.
And again, by most people's standards, people who aren't racist fools, Mandela will be remembered as one of the greatest, noblest leaders who has ever lived. He was indeed convicted of crimes, by a racist government that denied him any lawful, peaceful means to try to bring about political change in his country, so calling him a criminal is technically true but in reality, foolish.

I have seen enough to know I have seen too much. -- ALOTO

Well said. And those who defend Rhodes and cry "leftist" at the few political references in the film, don't have a leg to stand on.

reply

Rhodes may have done some good things, but without a doubt he was a white supremacist that treated many Africans as second class citizens and only cared about his legacy with the white community. This is not left wing propaganda as others have stated, but an absolute fact. I can see why she called him a bastard and I wholeheartedly agree.

Hollywood can't simply tell a story anymore without their oh-so-subtle left-wing crap thrown in for good measure. Sickening. Furthermore, their revisionist history is just plain wrong most of the time. But its insidious and those without a working brain will believe it. That's the scary part.

reply

For the few who have stated that Rhodes was a white supremacist I think you are missing my point totally. I sat down to watch a film about Africa/Malaria. The Mom in the story used the phrase that bastard Rhodes. She I would bet had never heard of Rhodes yet she used that phrase whilst reading from a history book or a computer, I can't quite remember.

This is the work of Richard Curtis (writer), I don't expect a histoy/moral lesson from him, keep your political views to yourself Curtis and get on with telling a story. I have a computer and I can look up the history of Rhodes myself and form my own opinion aswell as Mandela (soon to be a saint I suppose).

Evetday on every medium I have people from disk jockeys to journalists to celebrities spouting their views (nearly always left wing) whilst living in mansions and sipping champagne after going to posh schools and ivy league universities paid for by Daddy or Mommy.

All of you just f%*k off!!!

I went to a state school and no university for me, I run a small business employing 8 people and we are doing just fine.

p.s. I don't like champagne either, rant over....

You are a hateful unkind unhappy republican !

reply

You say I'm hateful, unkind and unhappy? Only to people who tell me what to think. Form your own opinion and stop listening to the masses. You say I'm a republican? I'm British so are you referring to an American political party or an anti monarchy stance? I haven't voted for 5 years and I have no real view for or against the Queen. You sound like a dreary grey faced no mark who accepts everything you are told, poor you.

reply

It seems a lot of people here think the opposite of "racist" is "leftist."

You can be someone who isn't a white supremacist without being a leftist. But I do appreciate the number of people who are willing to be so open and honest about what they believe. So many folks would be ashamed of it.

By the way, the bizarre and logically nonsensical assumption that the mother, being American, would know nothing of Rhodes is mind-boggling. I infer that this type of logical fallacy is prevalent in the opinions of the OP. I think that some of what this person thinks of as "chamoagne" (???) socialist left wing views might simply be EDUCATION.

I couldn't disagree with you more in everything you said, you talk total nonesense, however you're entitled to your opinion I suppose. As for the champagne typo I did and for you to point that out it is a little pedantic don't you think? Stay lucky....
