ok so WHAT did they achieve?

Why was a movie made about these 2 women? What did they achieve? Got 50 nets for the orphanage? Really. Why at the end of the movie did they not say what they achieved, why did it not reference their organization or sites of NGOs that are in the fight against malaria.

When you see the house Mary lives in she certainly, all by herself could afford more than 50 nets, hell just by selling all the ipods and video cameras and crap her kid had she could raise enough money to get those nets, so I don't get this movie.

Did their intervention in front of the senate commitee lead to anything?

When was this? Who goes to Africa and not do all they can to NOT catch malaria, knowing that yes there are no guarantees, but in this day and age of internet there is zero excuse to not:
1-take your meds
2-have a mosquito net
3- lather yourself with deet bug spray

and yes even with that you might still get it but you've done everything you could and should . And if you are so concerned about the Africans around you NOT havving those same privilages, well all you ddi to raise money to get to spend on your trip, do the same to raise money to finance the same for the Africans you know.

There were lots of wholes in this story. That this woman would show up at her senators office STILL not knowing anything about malaria blew my mind. Don't know if realilty was like that.

So I ask you, people on this board because you might have more info than I did (saw the movie on a plane so maybe it was truncated or whatever). What did these 2 women achieve and why was a movie made about them?

reply

The point of the film was to spread information about Malaria and how it could be stopped and what we can do about it.

Its that man again!!

In that case why not refer to websites or organizations to spread the correct information or to support charities or medical research trying to eradicate malaria?

Put them at the end of the movie.

Who the heck doesn't know about Malaria? Knowing about it isn't going to solve the problem. I mean there wasn't even a proper "exposition" section in the movie where like they discuss proper prevention methods, myths (why some people actually chose not to medicate), medical research on mosquitoes and humans, different reactions to malaria etc...

If the intent was to get information out there I found it did a very poor job. I was hoping that I'd missed like the end of the movie where they usually have the : "If you want to help go to X, or if you want more information go to Y"

So yeah total FAIL for me.

As the person below said, it's about getting the message out. Sure, she was wealthy and could have done a lot more with her personal money, but the point is, if you don't get the message out to a wider group of people, what good is one person really going to do to eradicate this problem? She could probably buy a hundred thousand nets, but without the wider recognition and wider education, one person really can only do so much, and in the end, it wouldn't be enough.

If your nose runs and your feet smell, you were built upside down.

P.S. I do agree that rich people could certainly do more, though. I mean RICH people.

Well, for one this board has opened up discussion. I bet anyone who sees this movie will never go to Africa unprepared.
Just my 2 cents.
