You just didn't get it. It was a movie based on another movie about a board game not based on a video game based on a video game movie.
shareI think you have a point. The video game aesthetic really is uncinematic... It was so here, but the kids (target audience) watch almost anything.
I think one of the few movies that manages to pull it off is Edge Of Tomorrow (A.K.A. Live Die Repeat). But that movie had big stars, Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt, and used the trope of respawning in a sci-fi way to relate it to how experience changes people and how they relate to one another... It was much more of a movie in that way...
I wonder what Spielberg has done with Ready Player One. I'll check it out this week.
