Sequel might be planned for late 2019, to go up against Star Wars Episode 9

Sony's CEO pleased as hell at the sensational box office (over $772 million worldwide and still going) and mentions a sequel is very likely.

Only problem now is - the Rock is booked and very busy cooking. He may not have time to squeeze in filming for Jumanji Reloaded even if he wanted to. If you ask me, he should drop San Andreas 2 (if he's not locked into a contract). The first film was awful, and there is no way a sequel would do anywhere near as good as a Jumanji sequel.

Obviously, there are a lot of moving parts here. For one thing, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is extremely busy and in high-demand. He has a wealth of upcoming features that have yet to begin filming, including San Andreas 2 and Black Adam. And then there’s that Fast and the Furious spin-off co-starring Jason Statham, and due out July 26, 2019, not to mention the next Fast and the Furious film, slated to open in 2020. In other words, is the Rock even going to have time to fit Jumanji into his very busy schedule? And then, of course, there’s his rumored (and likely not-happening) presidential run to consider…

From a story perspective, unless the sequel takes place in a similar setting with the same game characters, then they wouldn’t exactly need Dwayne to return (they could of course take their characters out of the game). Would they even dare to do that? Doubt it and that would be extremely disappointing.

If he does join the sequel, it will be quite a feat making it by 2019. He’s gonna have to drop some of his other projects (I could definitely see him dropping out from the San Andreas sequel), but who knows how he’ll work it out. Seeing how Welcome to the Jungle was a massive success, I assume he would rather return for a sequel to this movie rather than friggin’ San Andreas 2. Hopefully. Sony may have to set another release date for the movie.

A third Jumanji would be warranted btw.

I agree. Technically, they could have any actors in the "game world" and Dwayne doesn't have to come back. But it's clear the audiences loved the chemistry between Dwayne-Jack-Kevin-Karen. It will be interesting to see how they handle this sequel when it comes to casting.

And I'm with you on the San Andreas 2 thing as well. Dwayne should just ditch it and focus on the Jumanji sequel. San Andreas 1 wasn't even good in that "turn your brain off" kind of way (I was getting that cheap Sharknado vibe in many places), and the profit-to-budget ratio pales in comparison to what Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle made.

Jumanji - better liked, better money, more potential (one of the original ideas was to have a mobile game that caused far more people to be sucked into the game. They could go with that for the sequel, perhaps). Stay with the Jumanji universe, Dwayne.
