does it reference the original at all?

I really have no interest in seeing this movie, just curious. I think it'd be kind of cool if maybe they stumble upon Alan's treehouse or something, with writings by him about missing home. Maybe not his name or anything. Something that to a new viewer would just be a cool setpiece, but to fans of the original would be something a bit more obvious.

SPOILER ALERT (obviously)

The four main characters meet up with Nick Jonas who's also 'stuck' in Jumanji and has taken refuge in a tree-fort kinda structure. He says it was built by Alan Parrish, and shows them his carved initials on a tree branch.

I thought it was pretty cool..

Nice. Thanks for sharing.
I like it when movies show this kind of respect or recognition to what preceded it.

As mentioned there is the tree-house. There are also some not so obvious references.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

I think many might have missed this, but at the beginning when the Jumanji game is found it is a board game. After Alex receives the game from a friend he later makes a comment about "Who plays board games anymore" and tosses it on a shelf. Then later that night (I assume it is later the same night) the game transforms. When Alex opens the box it contains a video game cartridge.

At one point in the movie the players trapped in the game receive a black carved elephant piece, which apparently is the piece that Robin Williams' character used in the original movie.

As the other posts show it does tie well into the original while updating it.
