Why are people sure he was actually possessed?

Can't there be another explanation for his behaviour? I thought it was giving massive hints that he was his own undoing, and everything external that happened to him were all mental triggers.
He's quite unstable to start with, then took all manner of hallucinogens, including acid, and went though a bunch of hideously traumatic events. He then got totally obsessed by it all, blacking out for large periods of hallucinations and self torment and torture.
But it's not necessarily a 'possession' in the religious sense of the word.

He went off his nut! - is another explanation.

He may not have been 'possessed' in the traditional sense of the word but he was certainly being attacked/haunted by supernatural forces and what ever is doing it has the characteristics of the 'demon' he tried to summon with the swinger couple.

Remember, this is a found footage film and we are seeing the footage from the camera, our information is not from Michael playing the role of an unreliable narrator. We see the camera footage of Michael being flung and pulled about the house, we see a 2nd video camera feed turn and talk to him - these are not incidents in his head but what the camera is recording.

Oh yes, I forgot it was found footage, the camera feed scene has about 6 cameras in it, when we can only really see 2, one on the floor looking at him and one in the corner of the room.
But magically we see closeups of his face from the left, a portrait style image of him from the front, and a closeup of the TV from another angle. So I was just watching a normal film, rather than anything 'filmed' by the subject.

I really liked the idea that his was crazy, taking DMT for a start would send anyone over the edge, let alone having a strange ritual at the same time.

Also, the range of octaves his possessed voice(s) emitted were impossible for any human to duplicate, unless that person tampered with the audio.

Because it is a horror movie, not a psychological thriller.

Plus, besides what people mentioned about his voice(s), he also clearly has demonic eyes & face in several scenes...and displays supernatural strength in several instances.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Besides all the impossible things we see Michael do, we actually see images of the demon on screen, in the recordings. It started when he dared the demon to "come and get me." Right after that, there are about three frames of a demonic face within the video. Later, we can see the demon (although with a different face) lurking upstairs while he's outside and later right in the room with him.

So, unless Michael was not only psychotic but also faking the tapes - which seems contradictory - then it was a real possession.

All_Seeing_Fly your argument may have some validity to it and is though provoking but there were scenes where his body was being contorted in a way that was just not normal and his eyes were more than just blood shot in others. In my opinion he was possessed by a demon.
