Loved this, don't know if I could ever do it!

I've read the books and heard at least one reading on This American Life before, but it was so much fun to watch this.

I don't know if I would ever e brave enough to read out loud from my teenage diary. Not to a live audience, anyways. Brave people!

When a cold momma gets hot, boy how she sizzles!

It's all fake

reply

Yeah I got the feeling that feeling within five mins of watching it. To me the people seemed way to comfortable and laid back to be real. And the way they read their journals pausing waiting for the audience to laugh sealed it for me. I got the feeling that these were just a bunch of wanna-be writers who never made it and thought their writing was so clever.

reply

Are you sure? Where's your proof?

reply

It is NOT fake. I have been dating one of the people who read their material in the show for years and went through the selection process with her and met the producers.

I am surprised at how many people immediately jumped on the idea that this entire thing is fake. I can assure you personally it is NOT. The journals are pieced together to form a coherent "story line" and are practiced many times in front of the producers before they go on stage. That is the only "fake" aspect to the live shows and the movie. The reason they pause and wait for laughs is because many of them have read their journals many times to audiences so they know where the audience usually laughs. I's called comedic timing.

These people are doing EXACTLY what the movie says they are doing. Getting up in front of a live audience and reading directly from their journals, diaries, school work, etc. from when they were children.

reply

Agreed. There is so much genuineness in all the readings. If it's fake, these people are the best actors and writers in the world. You can't fake teenage angst 20 years later!
