Will Larry David ever stop playing Larry David?

It's getting old now. Don't market this as an original film when its just a fantasy Curb Your Enthusiasm episode

reply

Why should he?

I don't think it is getting old. I think it worked very well. Fantasy CYE is better than no CYE at all.

Thank you for finally asking the question I had after the first few minutes of "Clear History"!

Hey, I loved Curb as much as the next fan. But he wasn't even playing "Curb" Larry David. THAT Larry was funny because he smartly pointed out the endless stupidly of certain self-absorbed behavior in other people. In "Clear" he's BECOME the stupid acting self-absorbed person that "Curb" Larry wouldn't want to spend more than two minutes being around.

And just because "Curb" is great doesn't make everything Larry David does gold. I loved Woody Allen in "Annie Hall," but his same shtick was what made his later film "Hollywood Ending" near unwatchable.

Thank you. I've watched Curb and some seasons are better than others - some episodes are gold, while others clearly aren't. This movie did have the Curb 'feel', some of the same players, writers, etc. So it was up and down for me too, and a tad tiring with the "same-ole-same-ole" at points, but shines at others.

My biggest problem: This was a movie and it was hard to stay in that with it being mired down with much 'Curb' feel. The movie tried to pull away, but didn't. Sorry Chicago fans, but it needed a decent soundtrack over their plugged songs -- this is not to say the Chicago songs were bad, they just didn't flow with the story at points, and that distracted me from liking the movie too.

As kirchadams points out, I love Woody Allen and his films, and I've seen a great deal of his films --whether he was in it or not -- and I like some of them, love a few, commend others. But it works when it works, and gets grading when it gets grading. Let me also add Albert Brooks (few) films to this too...

It is 100% this for me:
In "Clear" he's BECOME the stupid acting self-absorbed person that "Curb" Larry wouldn't want to spend more than two minutes being around.

You criticize entertainment, yet you never entertained.

No.

When you're not concerned with succeeding, you can work with complete freedom.

reply

I Hope Not.

Stupid thing to say. Plenty of people play themselves, William Hurt, Joe Pesci, Clint Eastwood, Samuel L. Jackson, Jack Nicholson, etc. Who gives a sh!t? Is everyone suppose to act like Meryl Streep and Matt Damon?

If you don't enjoy a character actor, don't watch movies that they're in.

-What you gonna see?
-Something that starts soon and looks good.

Absurd. You could make the same claim about Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, Bob Hope, Woody Allen, Bob Newhart, and many of the other widely considered greatest comedians of all time who were great precisely because the created one great comedy character who could be used again and again in various situations.

Yes, his character is the same but the story is nothing like Curb Your Enthusiasm, except, perhaps, for the structure.

I agree. It's a bit like asking why Jack Benny and W.C. Fields never studied with Stanislavsky (for two more examples to add to the list above).

last dvd: The Best of Mr. Peabody & Sherman (1959)

Great point.

exactly. many actors play themselves/the same character over and over and nobody complains, we love these actors/characters, we follow them along time and look forward to see what they're up to next. why should larry david be different from woody allen?

reply

Why on Earth would you stop playing a character that has made you half a billion freaking dollars

Death to shakeycam directors!
