Wow this was awful

A friend recommended this and said it was the funniest thing he'd seen in years but . . . Is this supposed to be a comedy? I suppose if your idea of comedy is some creepy old man whining all the time then it must hilarious.
And let's not even get started on the fact that in the film he had been dating Amy Ryan who is clearly about 30-40 years younger than him, I mean he's just not a likeable character at all and yet I'm guessing we're supposed to like him(?)

I've never seen Seinfeld or CYE so maybe that's the problem - were all the jokes in this film ones that you only understand if you've seen them?

oh and . .
Michael Keaton reprising his Beetle Juice character in this was very wierd too. What was that all about?

Definitely. Larry has to grow on you. I didn't even like CYE when I first saw it but then my bf was watching it all the time and I fell in love with it.

"Larry has to grow on you", means you have to become a pedant with the smallest mind possible.

The genius behind Seinfeld was obviously Jerry Seinfeld, because Curb Your Enthusiasm sucked. I just cringed when I saw that show because it was just horrrrrrible. Larry David isn't capable of performance, he just isn't a very likeable person.

I won't ever watch this movie because he's just going to be this completely miserable a-hole much like Woody Allen always is. It's just self indulgent neuroticism and it's garbage. People are far too accepting of utter garbage.

You are just extremely stupid. Seinfeld was obviously Larry David's creation. It never reached the heights of Curb your enthusiasm though. The brilliance of Larry David is that he cuts right in to matters like prejudices, racism or whatever. One of the best episodes of CYE is The Palestinian chicken of the Eighth season.

No you didnt miss anything, the movie was horrible, dumb and outdated jokes.

Just like this comment!

Actually to get a lot of the humor in this movie you have to first read "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand.

reply

Really? Or is that a troll post. I get that the story bears some similarities to The Fountainhead, but I've read it and I certainly don't think that it made any difference to how awful I found this movie to be.

reply

Again, not seeing CYE or Seinfeld (which I guess you would hate) would not give you enough to enjoy it.

I once hated Seinfeld but then somehow had a complete turnaround. Then tried Curb and hated that and also eventually liked it There was even a couple of years gap in between the hate and love.

(I normally try to immerse myself in things I hate - to see what the reason is - sort of a challenge for me).

i never really watched seinfeld but love Curb I think its fantastic! Clear History was good...not great like Curb, but I still enjoyed it and the cast kept you interested for sure.

reply

Amy Ryan looks younger than she is, and Larry David looks older. The film is basically a two hour episode of CYE, but that's his shtick -- a middle-aged whiny Jew. So if you've never seen either of his shows, you obviously wouldn't like this.

reply

Anyone who hasn't seen Seinfeld cannot be taken seriously.

reply

I can't understand how somebody has never seen Seinfeld.

reply

Agree, it was extremely bad, turned it off after 10 minutes

I'm a fan of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but this movie seemed like a much longer but far less funny episode of the show. It had some of the typical Larry David arguments interspersed through it that were reminiscent of CYE, and they seemed to be the only bright points of the film, but as an actual movie it fell flat. Even the main character's dilemmas with other characters were far less interesting than Larry's on CYE.

Instead of this, it seems like they should have just made a CYE reunion movie since this was little more than the same thing without most of the cast except for J.B. Smoove. (The irony could have been the way Larry felt about reunion specials on his own show when he reunited the Seinfeld cast).

Also, what was with Bill Hader getting second billing? His role was almost non-existent and he had all of maybe 5 lines.

The cast is listed alphabetically, Merlin.

A whole 10 minutes? Must be great to have the attention span of a hummingbird.

reply

LOL. funny comment :-)
I have to admit that the hubby and I weren't super impressed - it did seem like an overlong episode of CYE, but we love that show so a bad episode of CYE is still better than a good episode of almost anything else :-)

reply

Quite simply it's not for everyone. Same with Curb. You get it or you don't. You love it or hate it.

reply

You'''re trolling but ill bite...

You have never watched Curb Your Enthusiasm. Don't tell me you have. You haven;t.

Also, Keaton is not playing that Beetlejuice person...so stfu.

To paraphrase your reply : "I'm too stupid to come up with any kind of valid response to a reasoned posting, so I'll accuse the OP of being a troll, then I'll call him a liar and swear at him".

I think we found the troll.
