The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water really has nothing to do with and no ties with the first Spongebob movie which sucks.

shareThat's common with movies based on TV shows without a continuing storyline. They could've brought back the characters from the 1st movie, but it could've:
1) Come off as they trying to end the show again.
2) Felt repetitive and/or uncreative.
