The kind of comedy writing that....

...needs a laugh track and a stupid general audience.

Just like the new Vacation movie...incidentaly starring Ed Helm with a foul mouthed kid.....

Where to now Kessler?, Ducks Breath!

So disappointed with the recent Vacation remake! I was looking forward to it because I love the Chevy Chase originals. The remake with Helms was awful and embarrassing.

reply

it needs much more than that! an enema for starters.

Have seen the commercials, but can tell this is, "We have a really weird family (laughter), so let's bring them together for Christmas (for even more laughter).
And then for the REALLY BIG LAUGH, let's have them all DANCE IN THE KITCHEN.
Never seen this before.

reply

It's not we have a weird family, it's we have a dysfunctional family. It isn't a lighthearted comedy at all. This is a drama and a melodramatic one at that with slight moments of bad unfunny humor.

And of course an adorable household pet tilting its head when something awkward happens. I'm sure that dog guaranteed another half a million at the box office right there.

reply

that dog got on my nerves big time. There is nothing adorable about a dog licking and eating food out of pots and pans in the kitchen. They tried way too hard for that dog to be adorable and endearing. It didn't work.

...And apparently doesn't go well with the type of condescending people that inclusively brand all those silly, superficial peasants as the "stupid general audience".

I mean, really now. Leaving my personal thoughts of this movie aside, it simply isn't a comedy, whatever official word may be on it; judging it solely based on the standards of a comedy despite that fact simply comes off as proof of thick-headedness and nothing more.

I hate being harsh like this and I'm sorry if this comes out as offensive, but your use of "a stupid general audience" as if to imply that you're somehow so much better than the "average person" is so condescending and arrogant that I could hardly stop myself.
To me it seems that by expressing your dislike of this movie the way you did, you simply showed either that you're so narrow minded as to ignore a truth that lays plainly in front of your eyes (that is, that you're not watching a comedy), or that you're just in a mood to complain and you do so without any regard for the genuinity of your complaints. Well, either one of those or you just wanted to call the general audience stupid, presumably to make yourself feel distinguished.

If you wanted to complain that this movie wasn't actually a comedy, or that it was terrible as a drama, then that'd be an entirely different matter. But complaining that a movie that obviously isn't a comedy (again, despite whatever the official word may be) is doing a bad job at being a comedy is just pointless, in my humble opinion. But most importantly, what I just said is obviously and inveitably affected by my own personal view and may thus be completely off-track; therefore, I have no problem with it if your opinion actually is that this movie is simply a comedy that was badly written. What I do have a problem with is your choice to express it in such a patronizing manner.

reply

But it probably won't have the former...and hopefully won't have the latter either, but who knows?

reply

Well it does move slowly. It does not however try to manipulate us into watching it, as in the title "The kind of comedy writing that...." where we must read the discussion to know what it is about. Personally, I would have used a title such as "Needs a laugh track and a stupid general audience" that would draw the people to the discussion that agreed and informed those that disagreed to ignore it.

I don't even remember making this post. lol No I don't drink either.
