7.8 on IMDB and made just over half what it took to make...

In theaters. That does not equal out. People give this high praise just because it has lesbians in it or what?

Firstly; this is a French movie (French-Belgian-Spanish co-production), which cost €4 million to make (about $4.18 million today, but because of changes in exchange rates about $5.33 million at the time). The movie made $19.5 million worldwide, with (I think) close to half of that in France alone, so I expect the producers were perfectly happy.

[BTW I normally quote Box Office Mojo for theatre takings, but their figures are clearly badly wrong for this movie: they give the French takings as $8.38 million, but they then give the "Foreign" total (i.e. takings outside USA and Canada, and therefore including France) as $5.18 million - go figure...]

Secondly; the film's IMDb rating is based mainly on Non-US voters by a ratio of around 5:1. This makes sense for a movie whose market was mainly in Europe...

Three hours. Long films tend to tank because they get less screenings. Plus being a foreign indie.

Wiki says it took 19.5 mill dollars and a 4 mill euro budget.
