How much sex does this movie have?

I wanna buy the Criterion edition but I'm kinda skeptical because I've heard there are a lot of sex scenes and I don't want to just watch a three hour porno (even if it won the Palme d'Or).

About eleven minutes worth. The first sex scene is about seven minutes long, and the second and third are two minutes each. The big problem people have with the sex scenes (myself included) is how unrealistic they are - I don't think any lesbian couple has ever scissored reverse cowgirl style. I also don't think any lesbian couple has ever successfully scissored. The director is a straight male - of course he wanted something to jack off to in the dailies.

It has 11-12 minutes of sex scenes (none of which, by the way, are probably long enough for the average guy to masturbate to). The movie is also 3 hours long and all the sex scenes are in the first hour. It would be very ineffective as a "3 hour porn movie".

I also laugh at all these lesbians who seem to somehow know how every other lesbian in the world has sex--even if they're 20 years younger and French. I don't know how all straight couples have sex. I don't know how all gay men have sex. I don't know how all other men drain their dragons. It's monumentally stupid to say "nobody does that" when it comes to sex.

It is OBVIOUS though that this is not "girl-on-girl" porn for straight guys. All you have to do is watch some "girl-on-girl" porn for comparison.

i will say that i share with some of the original poster concerns. i had a similar ambivalence before seeing this film, and "the handmaiden", both of which had very explicit lesbian sex scenes, and were both critically praised as well. For me, the conflict was whether i was seeing the film because it was a good film, or if i was interested in the film for prurient reasons. Probably also why i haven't bought the criterion collection of this film yet either.

I did find that the film, from what i recall when i saw it a few years ago, goes into universal themes found in any relationship - infidelity, drifting apart, etc. So, the sex is part of a larger context.

If it were a anime they would call it a hentai . I saw a bit of it in a local film club and some people were having a date with rosie palms while watching "Blue Is In The Warmest Colour" and some females as well . Needless to say they were kicked out and told to take their business else where . I suggest you don't get it since its porn through and through .

They're not all in the first hour. The scene in the café is very late in the movie.
