Did Emma lie to Adele about not loving her anymore...

I understand Emma was extremely distraught over Adele's cheating and later responded with "no" when Adele asked her if she loved her anymore; however, what about the fact that she still hung up nude portraits of Adele at her show?? Doesn't that mean that she still has an underlying love and affection for Adele and almost wanted to pay tribute to it? What do you guys think?

reply

I think she did lie. Emma definitely loved Adele but I think their connection with each other was more sexual, more intense than anything. I think, outside of sex, they didn't make the greatest pair. Emma made the right decision. Adele was too immature for a relationship she would have cheated again or lost interest and left emma.

reply

The way I understood it, Adele cheated because she felt lonely, but Emma cheated first...

I got the same feeling. I think Emma used Adele's infidelity to get out of a relationship that was beginning to bore her.

Emma did still love Adele but she knew Adele was no good for her. Adele was still fresh, young and new in the world. She had a lot more exploring to do. I think Adele was infatuated by Emma and I think Emma was drawn and attracted to Adele but I don't think they had anything else in common besides passionate sex and deep kissing.

You can love someone but not be in love with them.

reply

That's right. She saw remnants of the love she once felt for Adele, but it was no longer there in the way it used to be. It was a deep seeded admiration (or "tenderness" as Emma put it), instead of the burning passion of their past relationship. But who's to say Emma won't wake up one day and realise that she still loves her? I think flickers of that love is still present in the paintings, so maybe it's still present in Emma, it's just not as palpable anymore.

reply

Maybe, but I think the portraits are irrelevant... Why would you destroy work that is good enough to be shown, regardless of whether the feelings behind it are painful? The pain informs the art, but it wouldn't necessarily be essential, in order to appreciate it.

I just saw the movie and have a totally different take on the end of the relationship.

Emma always struck me as a serial lover. She loves passionately and intensely for short periods of time then just wants to move on to someone new and interesting. Sort of the artists search for the next muse. She just used Adele's affair (unproven) as an excuse to break up the relationship. Emma was ready to move on, Adele (who comes from a more conservative background) was not. Adele was expecting a life long relationship, Emma was not.

I don't believe it's clear Emma is a serial lover. The way I see it take away the fact Adele cheated and ask yourself would the relationship have endured had it not happened. I believe Emma would have ended the relationship anyway, just maybe not that quickly. Emma was much more mature, had a better understanding of herself. She wouldn't have remained with someone she had so little in common with.

It was almost inevitably Adele would cheat when faced with Emma's fading interest in her, she didn't have the experience or maturity to see the relationship had run it's course.

I agree with you both. How?

Emma chose Lise because they had a great mental connection and could be friends, partners, lovers. It was an adult, mature relationship. Emma settled down, became an adoptive mom.

Her relationship with Adele grew increasingly boring as they had nothing to do when they weren´t *beep* or Adele was posing for her. Adele became a housewife. They were past the point of "let´s talk and get to know each other" and their relationship was starting to decay. Like when she threw a party for Emma and she barely spoke to her because found Lise more interesting and funny (she is talking and giggling with Lise as Adele is dancing to the actor guy).

But I also agree that Emma is a free soul, a serial lover. A person like her can last a long time in a serious relationship (like, 2 years with Sabine before Adele) and fly out of the nest as soon as they feel too much pressure and they are willing to be on the prowl again.

reply

Yes I agree with the post above. Emma's interest in Adele was waning. She was out late with Lise that night, gave her all her attention at the party, and then refused sex with Adele. Adele did feel lonely, and cheated. I think Adele just gave Emma the perfect excuse to leave the relationship right then.
Now , on the other hand, Emma isnt not as passionate for Lise,,, but she said thats her family now. She loves the child and has been with Lise 3 years when we see Adele and Emma at the coffee shop. Emma may still love Adele, in a sense, but they were mismatched in artistic interests. I loved the movie. Fine acting from all. Will there be a sequel? Does anyone know?
