In the first movie, it's stated that they live near Sydney, Australia. In this film, they're still living in the same place but they're also a stone's throw from California.

They weren't a "stone's throw", but the trip was just a really long, uneventful journey across the currents which was irrelevant to the main story so they decided to just skim over it. Akin to driving I-80 from San Francisco to New York
shareThey should have made the journey to California the main part of Marlon and Nemo's portion of the movie. Once they got there, they didn't do all that much. I wanted to see more dangerous ocean adventure, but they took a different approach and it wasn't too bad.
