Plot Hole

Tried to submit this item through regular channels but IMDb is NOT recognizing it so here it goes:

How does a community with strong connections to it's church allow it to remain closed for two months or longer with no other church available to worship? The ground wasn't even broken for the "new" church. Where are these people going each week? Couldn't they use it until demolition?

Would appreciate any reasonable comments or thoughts on this subject.
