started off great

But really fizzled at the end. All of the chidren were fantastic as were Janeane Garafelo and Ralph Maccio. Great setup, charming fantasy elements, I thought I was in for a real treat. But nothing much came of it at the end.

That's more or less how I felt as well. Once the movie was over I was like, "That's it?" I thought everything was building up to some big chess tournament where the two main girls would clash but instead, as you say, it just fizzled out. Instead, we get some lame game between the two at the end of the movie, when there's no way that Max would have learned enough to take on a seasoned player who had been privately coached for what is probably years.

The movie also was strangely edited. There were lots of dissolves from one very short scene to the next, almost like the movie was a series of vignettes instead of a single cohesive story.

All in all I'd give it a 6/10. Cute movie, but not one I'll ever watch again. Searching for Bobby Fischer is still the greatest chess movie of all time.

I have heard that is good, but have never seen it. Will have to check it out. Good point about the editing, now that you mention it.
