This show is seriously not funny...

I watched 10 minutes of an episode and then changed the channel to reruns of The Golden Girls. Even THAT show is funnier than this hipster garbage. And that's really saying something, since The Golden Girls is not very funny at all. Is IFC ever going to produce a comedy that's actually funny? This show, Maron, Portlandia, Comedy Bang Bang.... all profoundly un-funny.

reply

Comedy Bang Bang is abysmal. Most of the stars I see on there look like the best part of the visit was watching their arm hair grow. HORRIBLE show.

I was laughing at the episode I saw tonight. And Kate has got to be the most unbearably adorable woman I've seen. I just want to pick her up and squeeze her.

reply

One person's unbearably adorable is another person's unbearably annoying. Her voice, her nose, her eyes, her haircut... Her whole "I'm so tiny and quirky and little girl cuuuuuuuuuuuuute!" shtick: everything about her wants me make to stab forks into my eyes. Hated her the first time I saw her on The Big Bang Theory. Riki is only slightly better. Hated her the first time I saw her on The Big Bang Theory, too. In fact, her episode is the lone episode of that show I find it impossible to re-watch. If that one comes on, I change the channel. All of the others I can manage to watch even if I've seen them before. Don't get me wrong, The Big Bang Theory isn't that great, a very slightly better than average typical network sitcom. But it's watchable if there is nothing else on tv. And it's a lot better than Garfunkel and Oates.

reply

Kate is genuine, lovely and talented.

You're absolutely right in that what melts one person's butter won't even warm the pan for someone else.

Personally, I find Kate Miccuci ridiculously cute/hot/sexy/adorable/lovely/gorgeous/please-run-away-with-me looking. What a bonus - she's hilarious, too.

To each their own, though.

reply

I disagree with everything you've written.

I think this show (Garfunkel and Oates) is pretty funny. Not an instant classic or anything, but worth watching.

Never watched more than five minutes of the Golden Girls. Comedy Bang Bang seems dull, but I've only watched one episode, so I may be wrong. Love Portlandia. Haven't watched Maron or The Big Bang Theory, so no opinion on those.

reply

Garfunkel and Oates is funny. The first two episodes were a little rough, but still funny enough to keep watching. The third and fourth episodes were hilarious.

I watch Big Bang Theory too, and I agree with the previous poster. The Ramona Newitzki(Riki Lindhome) episode isn't one of my favorites, but I did like Kate as Raj's love interest Lucy. I wish she could have been a more regular character for Raj, but oh well.

Portlandia used to be hilarious, I tried watching the new episodes that premiered after G&O but it's gotten ridiculous.

Golden Girls, I have zero interest in ever watching.

reply

I appreciate the effort you put into it (watched a whole ten minutes! Wow!), but I hope it's OK with you if some of us watch a whole episode and decide for ourselves from that.

(And I don't really see how this is a "hipster" show. Please explain.)

Most people who use that word have no idea what it means.

It's a phrase that sets off warning bells that the user may not know what he's talking about.

Like "politically correct."
Or "activist judge."
Or "Islamofascist."
Or "feminazi."
Or "irreducible complexity."

The Golden Girls is some classic television, man.
It's a little dated where almost every episode has some life lesson attached to it, as all the shows during that time seemed to do... but it was great television and is a modern day classic for a reason. I've liked it all my life... even if I am a young male and not an old lady - because it's good.

This show isn't doing anything remarkable... but funny is funny and I happen to like it.
I LOVE Comedy Bang! Bang!

But, you know... that's the thing about comedy. It's job is to make you laugh and it's hard to argue about what is objectively good if we're just talking about what happens to personally appeal to you. It's like arguing about whether your favorite color is better than my favorite color.

I LOATHE Jeff Dunham, but a lot of people like him. I like Mitch Hedberg and a lot of people don't. Who's better? Well, as much as it pains me to say it (because I REALLY think Jeff Dunham is garbage)... Jeff Dunham seems to bring more joy to people somehow.

And while I wouldn't normally argue that popular opinion should be weighted too heavily (other Transformers are the greatest movies ever)... since we're talking about something that is only really meant to bring joy to people then I can't think of a better way to judge "what's better than the next" here, can you? You know... if we felt we HAD to label like that.

Oh brother. I'm not crazy about IFC's "original programming" (except for "The Onion News Network" and "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret"). I wish they'd show more INDEPENDENT FILMS and not hack them apart with constant commercials, but. . .

This show is no worse than any other on the IFC, but I call anyone's opinion severely into question when he or she starts waxing nostalgic over "The Golden Girls". I'm an old guy relatively, but even I think the stuff that was on TV when I was a kid is much stupider than the stuff on TV today. Yeah, it was played straight without the hip, winking irony we've had since "Seinfeld" and "The Simpsons", but it was so DUMB it insulted my intelligence as a child. If I were in the 9th circle of Hell and they gave me the choice between watching this show for all eternity or "Full House", I'd take this, but I'm sure thay'd make me watch "Full House" because it is the 9th cricle of Hell after all. . .

reply

Really? Full House? That's like judging all of today's television by talking about Two and a Half Men. The only show that might have been worse was Family Matters (MAYBE - it's close).

The Golden Girls, Night Court, Cheers, Hill Street Blues, The Twilight Zone, Married with Children, Family Ties, Growing Pains, Newhart, Perfect Strangers, Roseanne, Alf, Empty Nest, Kids in the Hall, Facts of Life, Who's the Boss, Mr. Belvedere, The Cosby Show, A Different World, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, Moonlighting, Matlock, Charles in Charge, Saved by the Bell, Fraggle Rock, Garfield and Friends, He-Man, Transformers, Voltron, Dungeons and Dragons, Thundercats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and G.I. Joe.

Those are all shows I think that came out around the time of The Golden Girls... and Seinfeld came out right after and was a forerunner for a lot of the types of shows we have today... but there was A LOT of good television made around that time and The Golden Girls is OFTEN cited as one of the very best shows to come out during that time. You don't have to like it... but it was good.

And it's actually pretty incredible how consistently good the shows were during that time period of mostly only three channels to choose from.

But it WAS a different time. People wanted things that were "feel good" and a lot of that was a reaction to the 70s.
Look into the history of the movie "Rocky." Did you know Rocky was supposed to lose that fight? He was. That's what all the movies did during the 70s... they were dark and the protagonists normally lost or died or whatever. And that's what people thought they wanted... then Rocky came along and was a feel-good sensation and a large part of that was because it was actually different and unexpected! It's true... we'd expect him to have that sappy ending where he is victorious now... but that's just not what Hollywood was doing at the time.

As such, I give the original Rocky a lot of bonus points as a movie for it's ending... where I would normally roll my eyes at that sorta thing. In the same way, I love the show Bonanza and the Andy Griffith show and whatnot... not sure they could work if you tried to make them today... but considering the time they were made, the shows are pretty awesome.

...and just got done doing a Mr. Belvedere marathon... it was AWESOME! The show was hilarious and legitimately did make you feel good when you were watching it. That's not what I would call "dumb," man. That's not dumb at all.

I feel bad for you. You're missing out.

reply

Rocky didn't win.

reply

You are correct. My points still stand and it was still a feel-good sensation... whereas the ending was originally supposed to be a twisted one (as tended to be the ending of almost every movie made during that time) and Rocky was actually going to THROW THE FIGHT... he basically "won" since throughout the movie he never even had a goal of winning and never believed it was possible but his actual goal was just to make it through all 15 rounds (which he did).

The Golden Girls is one of the funniest shows ever.Your opinion is therefore not valid. If the Golden Girls is not funny what is to you?
