Is this show... ?

Like a female version Flight of the Concords, but American and less funny?

reply

Yes. It really is.
But I'm alright with that because there's a lot of room to be less funny than Flight of the Concords, in my opinion, and still be very enjoyable.

The funniest thing about Flight of the Conchords was Kristin Schaal. Still this show is many times better.

Different funny, it is kind of the woman version. They get away with things which would have not been possible on Flight of the Conchords, but I can live with their target audience being a bit more on the female side. But there are enough zany moments which are hilarious, to let me enjoy the show anyway.

The musical number happen randomly in an undefined space, which is a bit sad when looking at those surreal gems the Conchords produced, which always are part of the story.

WAY less funny. The musical numbers aren't even remotely in the same league as the conchords stuff. the conchords are extremely talented musicians. Their songs have multiple layers or guitar, syth, and vocal harmonies. They satire multiple different genres of music across several decades (David Bowie, Pet Shop Boys, 90's rap, etc) all while singing a song that is relevant to the episode, with really clever lyrics.

I think G&O are definitely trying to emulate FOTC, but they just don't have the wit or the musical ability. The thing that really bugs me about their songs is that they just sing in unison, with no harmonies, which is pretty much unheard for a duet. It sounds very amateurish. With all that said, I don't hate the show, but it's not even close to FOTC.
