I am a bit confused about his start as a serial killer.. I understand the psychological toll that the bombing did on his mind but had he killed her?

I know he had been stalking and obsessed with her, but during the bombing did he do all of those terrible things and make it look like she died from the bomb? Or did she die and he was so heartbroken that he didn't have a chance with her that he did all of those things then recreate it.

Sorry the motive just wasn't all clear.

IIRC, he was trapped and buried alongside her corpse for days after a particular German bombing run. His obsession with her and his penchant for obscene imagery took a twisted turn while lying beside her. I don't think he was mobile enough in the rubble to have done anything carnal.

Her lingering perfume would have haunted him. And probably her makeup staring back at him would be indelible. Thus, his re-creations and fulfillment of carnal desires are his attempts to make peace in his mind, I suppose.
